| Skin Around Anus Is Black And Crusty? I sort of have a weird question. I have a one year old male shorkie. The last couple of months I have noticed that Toby's anus is black. At first I thought this just might be tried poop, but now I am not so sure. He often will sit and cry for no reason, and he does alot of bum tragging on the floors. I think something else in going on and a trip to the vet is in order. The skin around the anus is light black and seems to be dry or crusty. Does anyone know what this could be? |

| Well Ive never looked at my dogs rear end before but did for you. It doesnt look like youve described. My dog does have a black crusty area on his back where he has allergies and chewed an area on his back. Maybe its because of allergies?

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Looks like some butt checks are going to be happening but without looking I can say my girls have kind of pink little butts - black doesn't sound right to me.... but I'll have to really look in good lighting to swear by what I just said But...just by hearing him cry and you thinking something may be wrong sounds like a vet check may be a good idea - you know your puppy better than anyone and if you think something isn't right - I would get it looked at. |

| It is called anal glands and if she doesn't know what she is donig she can hurt the poor boy..( and besides it smells really bad too!) It could also be dried stool too, Give him a bath or just put his butt in some warm water and make him sit for a bit. Does it come off? Could he have tapeworms? Either, anal glands need to be expressed or he could have tapeworms (reason to drag his butt on the floor) black crusty stuf??? I would say without seeing it , its probably dried stool. Good Luck, let us know

| It really sounds like tape worms to me. Due to the crusty stuff. Butt dragging by itself is usually sign of anal glands needing to be expressed. Tape worms are really easy for them to get...if ONE little flea jumps on them when they go outdoors and they bite it and swallow, BOOM you'll have tape worms. You should take him to the vet, have him treated if that is what it is. Over the counter tape wormers are pretty much useless. Make sure you repeat his treatment in 3 months. |

| When I got my pup - they said he had dried poop on his bottom and took him in and washed it off. But - he had exactly what you described for a week or so. I thought it might be dried poop still there, but it didn't want to be removed very easily, and I thought in case it is a scab or something, I don't want to pull it off. End result - this all cleared up within a week or so - no problem any longer. Carol Jean |

| today's update on toby Today Toby has been crying and trying to get at his bum, however he can't reach. I feel so bad. He won't let us near him now, he growls if we try to console him. I will be calling the vet as soon as they open. This is very disturbing. P.S. Expressing the anal glands is definitely best left to the professionals or someone who has experience. Not me. yuucckk. |

| Yes my first point was to say that get to the vet. My vet loves me. I have made him a very good living over the years. I am a paranoid mommy and odd behavior and a crusty butt would do it. Also, I don't do the anal gland thing!! I did it many years ago to a tiny toy poodle I had. She always had a problem so I just learned to do it myself and I sometimes wondered I didn't do it properly and THAT was the reason she did have problems. AND IT STINKS!! That was 15 years ago and I can think of it and smell it!! and she lived 13 years!! Pooey |

| Toby's Vet Appointment Just came back from the vet. She said that the discoloration around his anus looks to be just pigmentation. I could have sworn it used to be pink, but oh well. He does have black and pink pigmentation in his mouth as well, so that could explain the color. As for the discomfort toby is feeling and the scratching of the butt she is treating him for tapeworms. I told her that I washed Toby's bum this morning and I thought something sort of beige was poking out but I couldn't get it off. So anyway, that led her to believe that it might be tapeworms. He was dewormed as a pup, but not for tapeworms. I hope that's it. She also said that he was constipated, so we shall see what happens today. This is such I gross topic....isn't it????? As for his anal glands...nothing there to speak of. Anyway thanks for everyone's help and concern. |
