| Spinal Fracture in my 3 month old Yorkie :( My baby girl Daisy has a spinal fracture from what the doctor is telling us. She was attacked by a German Shepard and has a puncture wound on her back that has broken the bone and now her spinal cord has some bone fragments in it. We have taken her to a specialist and she is staying at the hospital until Monday. The doctor has given us a 1% chance that she will ever walk again. She is also incontinent of both bowel and bladder. Looks like we will be getting her a wheelchair in a few months after the fracture heals. The vets we talked to seem like they want us to put her to sleep, but that's not an option for us. She is in no pain and she is the same feisty little girl she's always been. She had no feeling at all in her left leg and some deep pain response in her right leg. Over the past few days she's gotten some feeling in two toes on her left back paw. The vet was happy that she's progressing, but still not hopeful about her walking. They made her a splint and she will come home in it and have to be crate confined for about three months. |

| This is so very sad. I'm so sorry your baby was so badly injured. It's obvious how much you love Daisy and how much you will do to give her a full life.

| Oh, my heart is breaking for you and your sweet baby. I believe miracles do happened! We took Zhoie to the University of North Carolina Vet School for AAI. The surgeons that did her spinal surgery are amazing and Zhoie has fully recovered from a major surgery. To add a word of encouraement, we were told they do several surgeries a a week for these little ones that have had serious spinal injuries with a high success rate. Is it possible for your to take her to a vet school? They have the latest equipment and the highest level of skills for teaching, it's simply astounding. Sending prayers for your baby girl.

| What a terrible, tragic thing to have happen! She is still so young that she will adapt quickly, though, and never remember life without the wheelchair. It will be normal, everyday gettin' around for her. She is lucky and blessed to have such a caring, loving furever family who is taking such good care of her. I agree with yorkiemom1, the owner of the attacking dog needs to man up for some of these bills. Many homeowner insurance policies cover dog bites, if it is not specifically excluded under liability. I would check with that owner anyway. Please keep us updated on Daisy's progress. I pray that she continues to improve and adapt and that her puncture wounds heal without incident. Photos when she is ready and you are able, please!

| I am so sorry! As an owner of a paraplegic dog, I can tell you that inability to walk is not that hard on a dog, they adapt very well! It was a learning curve for us but now that we are able to express her bladder and bowels, we are all just as happy as before! And don't give up hope completely - many dogs are able to "spinal walk" even if they can't feel or control it. Don't give up hope and you can always pm me if you want someone to talk to. I will keep you all in my prayers!! |
