| Adult hypoglycemia Hi, Yorkie family! Long time follower/reader, first time poster. I am sure this has been posted before, but the search engine is not bringing up anything b/c of too much info - I think. So I apologize in advance. Does anyone else have an adult yorkie that still has hypoglycemia issues from puphood? Everything I find on the internet only discusses hypoglycemia in puppies. Thanks, everyone! ~Chris |

| No, I have never had any such issues unless it was a sick pup. If an adult dog has hypoglycemia, I would think there is something going on medically. Welcome to YT...don't be a stranger.

| I have not heard of it either. How old is this pup, and have the symptoms been diagnosed by a vet, and have they been consistent through out it's life? I'd be a little worried that it is something other than hypoglycemia, as there are other illnesses that might present with similar symptoms. Only a vet would know for sure. Good luck in finding an answer. Keep us posted, and yes..... post a little more Welcome.

| Thank you - just waiting now Thank you for your replies. A little background: Bruno is 5 years old (and the love of our lives). About every 4 months, he trembles & has difficulty standing. He never lies on his side while he's having an "episode" (that's what I call it). However, he does have difficulty standing up. I give him syrup and he immediately bounces back (and acts as if nothing has happened). Also, his tongue and gums remain pink. Yesterday (several hours after I posted, it happened again. I then took him to the animal hospital. His BS tested normal as well as his heart rate, reap. rate, and feces. She said maybe epilepsy - but she was not too convinced. Today, I took him to his dr., who ran a blood panel on him (results will be in tomorrow morning). He too was a little confused. Hypoglycemia (if that it what it is) does not just happen in adult dogs. He is also leaning (if the blood panel comes back normal) to it not being a seizure at all but being from pain b/c of his luxating patellas...you know, he trembles b/c of the pain but is willing to jump right up after having some yummy syrup...this is just a thought. Both drs. told me that the syrup would not react that quickly in animals - make him recuperate in a matter of 10-15 seconds (but I don't know if I agree with that). He said that if his blood panel comes back normal, he wants to x-ray his knees & hips b/c it, again, may not be seizures at all but pain he is experiencing. Right now, unfortunately, it is just a wait & see game. I will know more in the morning. Thank you again for your responses! ~Chris |

| Years ago, I had a tiny little male that had hypoglycemia issues all his little life...and yes, he had issues with his pancreas, as well as other medical issues. When he was a baby, the breeder kept telling me he would grow out of it....well, that never happened. I watched his sugar constantly and made sure he was never left any length of time where he could not get to his food or a snack. |

| Have them test for liver shunt. Blood sugar levels run low in liver shunt dogs and it usually has hypoglycemia for a while before the effects of liver shunt kick in.

| My Yorkie was having low blood sugar episodes as an adult but I think in just about every case gums are pale/whitish so if he's weren't I would think it was something else. My vet said it is not normal for an adult to have low blood sugar so we did hundreds of dollars of testing and nothing ever showed up but at the same time I was getting more into dog food and noticed sugar was listed as one of the ingredients so I switched food and sense then we have never had any issues. My vet did tell me where I could prick her to test her blood sugar with my diabetic meter but I never got the chance. I still try to be careful with her and make sure if she is going to be going into a stressful situation that she eats first or if she is in a stressed situation I feed her a snack. I would have his liver tested and thyroid. In my opinion though I am not sure hypoglycemia is what it is.

| I have a 9 years old yorkie with hypoglycemia :( I ,too have an adult yorkie with hypoglycemic episodes She was diagnosed with hepatic microdysplasia (a problem with the liver that is a lifelong condition) when ,after 3 severe attacks and multiple vet visits and a month of tests, they figured it out..Since then, always have to make sur she is fed within 7-8 hours MAX and always have Nutrical on hand... I just had today another episode but what is confusing to me is she had just eaten AN HOUR before going out... BUT for the 1st time I was mowing the lawn with her and my other furbaby outside..Maybe she panicked??? But when after a couple minutes I couldnt see her, I went in the back and there she was lying on the grass with her tongue hanging out becoming WHITE OMG the panic But ,shaking and sweating, I managed to get out also a bottle of glucose the vet had given me 3 yrs ago when she had her last episode, some nutrical and also some babyfood puree(just pure chicke and veggies that I al;ways keep on hand coz easy to feed if she needs to eat and isnt hungry..) She was all weak and her eyes were closing omg...and then her mouth wouldnt open so I put the glucose in MY mouth and gently let some slip into her mouth on the side of her cheek.little by little..then I could open her mouth and she swallowed a bit and I put the nutrical on roof of her mouth..with a seringe I put more glucose and water and even some milk (has lots of sugar and protein) and after 40 minutes, she started coming out of it...was one of her worse episodes...She layed on me for another 30 minutes then she wanted to drink and she drank A LOT..but 30 minutes later afetr a small nap, she threw up everything twice... Then her little ears came up a bit (they were all down like when she is sick)...Now she has been sleeping for 30 minutes and her heartrate has gone down...OMG...So yes; I have an adult hypoglycemic yorkie too Poor baby ♥ |
