Just came home from hospital. Stress colitis? My yorkie just came home from the hospital. She's had her fourth case of bloody diarrhea since I got here in sept 2010. The new vet thinks it may be stress colitis since everything else has been ruled out. She's always been very anxious. When she's left alone she has diarrhea the next day. Or if people come over, or car rides, or walks she develops diarrhea. I have had her on probiotics. Ive tried lavender oil spray, dog calming music, thunder shirt, etc. She has bad food allergies. She reacts to pumpkin and coconut oil also chicken and grains. She has issues with the bacteria in her gi tract so she gets dr beckers probiotics. The blood in her diarrhea was bad today. I gave her cerenia last night at 8pm and Tylan at 7 am. Didn't stop the stomach gurgles or the diarrhea. Then the blood came this afternoon. The vet had me put her on metro and more cerenia for the pain. I also requested fluids. She was in a lot of pain until cerenia kicked in. She was shaking, tail between legs, prayer position. He proscribed Prozac. I haven't ordered yet. I've always been against anxiety medicine for her but at this point I don't know what else to do. Has anyone else experienced stress colitis with their dog. Or tried Prozac. I've been on anxiety mess myself and hated how I felt the first month and took myself off so I'm worried about her.

Hello, so sorry for your little girl. Two things, one, I thought Cerenia was for nausea not pain? Two, could the stress be causing an acid stomach also? That could result in gurgling and distress. Has the vet suggested Pepsid? None of the above explains the bloody diarrhea however. Like you, I do not like the idea of Prozac for her due to the possible side effects. I do feel for your poor girl, and you, and pray a solution is found soon.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Sorry to hear about your baby. My Cali has colitis and gets bloody diahrrea when really stressed. I have Metronidazole that I give her and it usually stops it right away. I hope you can get some help for her.

I've tried pepcid before but I think it messed up how she was digesting her food. I could try again. One of the vets did suggest it today. Cerenia is a anti vomiting anti inflammatory anti pain drug. I gave her 1/16 metro yesterday because 1/8 gives her weird side effects. She had dark red bloody diarrhea in the middle of the night. It was right when metro was wearing off so I gave her the 1/8th this time. She hasn't had any bowel movements since and begged for food this morning. Tail was back up too. I talked to one of the vets and they feel that as long as she is acting ok the metro should help. Still waiting for the other to call me back. The dark red scares me. I'm watching her really close. If she does it again I will be at the vet. Just wish I could figure out how to prevent it.

Just gave her a third dose of metro. As soon as she took it she ran to the bathroom and had more diarrhea. Just a tiny bit of blood this time. Wish the vet would call me back. I called this morning at 9 and again at 2 and still nothing. Fifth vet I've tried since all this started. Why is it so hard to find a good vet! Her butts sore so I put vasoline on it. Not sure what to do at this point. Usually after the first dose of metro the diarrhea is gone.

Poor baby, and her sore little bottom. I feel for you in your search for a definite diagnosis. So painful for you too to see her going through this. At this point does she have to take the Metro continually or will it cure the symptoms after a period on the drug? A scary disease, praying the cause is found and she gets well soon.

Thanks so much for all the prayers they are much needed! I'm hoping to give her a twelve day dose of metro and switch her to tylan once daily for keeping inflammation down. I'm thinking cerenia every other day may be helpful too. At this point I'm willing to try Prozac but scared because colitis is a side effect. I'm a stay at home puppy mommy but still have a very active life and I feel our life style may not be good for her. I hate to say this but I may need to rehome her to a home that's less active then my own. She's such an anxious dog. She's only two years old and three pounds. I can't even get dressed in the morning without her freaking out. At this point we are unable to go on our honeymoon because I'm terrified what will happen to her because of the stress it will cause. Plus she eats her poop which causes her to have bloody colitis so someone would have to watch her 24/7. I just feel so bad for her.

I fed her dinner. Is it weird that both times I've fed her, right after she has her tail between her legs and runs to the bathroom. Nothing came out this time. Vet seemed annoyed that I called to ask about blood still in her poop so I hate calling again. I asked about pepcid he said he didn't think she needs it.

Thanks everyone for the prayers. They are needed! I tried posting a response earlier but I don't think it went through! Sorry if it double posts. My hopes are to do twelve days on metro then switch to tylan maybe long term so she has an anti inflammatory in her. I think cerenia every other day may help too. I've heard good things about people having dogs on cerenia for ibd. I think I'll try Prozac after her belly clears up. Just worried since one of the side effects is colitis. She's only two years old and weighs three pounds. If Prozac doesn't help I may need to consider rehoming her. I'm a stay at home puppy mom but have a pretty active lifestyle. At this point I don't even leave the house without her and we are unable to go on our honeymoon since I'm scared of what will happen to her while I'm gone. She eats her poop which then causes colitis. So someone needs to watch her 24/7. I just not sure what else to do at this point.

| Since she's been having recurring episodes since 2010, has whipworms been ruled out? They don't show up on normal fecal tests, they need to do a fecal float test but it's still hard to spot, so treating for whipworms might be an idea...please relay this w/your vet. He/she shouldn't be annoyed, if that's the case, maybe you should find another more caring vet. Dog Whipworm (Trichuris vulpis) Infestations in Dogs Don't think pepcid is needed, as that's for acid. When Princess had her last colitis attack, she was prescribed amoxicillin & her poop firmed up on the 2nd dose...not sure if metronidazol is the best for colitis. She also had subcutaneous fluids, as they lose a lot of moisture from going so frequently, they can get dehydrated fast. Lastly, I noticed you said dark blood. Colitis always produces bright red fresh blood, as it's inflammation of the lower intestine/colon. Dark blood is from the stomach or upper intestine...

I treated her twice with pancur last may and July. She did seem to feel better afterwords but still is sick off and on. I was thinking the dark red blood was a bad sign too but both vets seemed to not think its a big deal. When he finally called back he said not to worry too much if blood and diarrhea are still there tomorrow but Thursday bring her back if its still there. I asked for fluids and I may bring her in again for more. I've been mixing water and pedialyte in her food and making her food soft like wet food so she can digest it. I'm still giving probiotics and she's on a venison and split pea food. I can't really give her a bland diet since she reacts to everything. Ill ask about amoxicillin Thursday if diarrhea is still there. Last year they said this was hge but now thinking just colitis. We have tested for Addison's, pancreatitis, liver shunt, ibd, exploratory surgery etc. She reacts to cleaning products so all toxic cleaning products have been thrown away. I'm with her 24/7 so if she did eat something it would have to be super small. We have hard wood floors so I pretty much see everything on the floor. I've asked if I can test for yeast but both vets looked at me like I was crazy lol. Maybe I am at this point. Just want a happy healthy little girl.
