| Just diagnosed with pancreatitis Found YorkieTalk after googling pancreatitis in Yorkies. Lucky, my 14 yr old Yorkie, was diagnosed today (after 4 vet visits and over $1000). Vet gave us appetite stimulant which I am holding off on for now. It is contradictory to most treatment info I'm finding on the internet. Anyone on here have a yorkie diagnosed with pancreatitis and given an appetite stimulant? |

My 12+ yorkie was recently hospitalized for pancreatitis...he was in ICU. Here is a thread with information about him: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...creatitis.html If this was pancreatitis, the treatment would be IV fluids in most cases, pain meds and they usually withhold food for the first day at least. Seems like this has gone on for days with your pup, so perhaps he is past the danger point. Good luck and keep us posted.

| Pancreatitis is not caused from "not" eating, so I'm not real sure why the Vet. would give an appetite stimulant. The underlying cause of pancreatitis is not known, but could be an immune disease. This condition can come on after overindulgence in rich or fatty foods. Frequent attacks of pancreatitis can finally result in a lack of insulin, leading to diabetes. Usually a "natural" diet and regular exercise is important. This regulates the intestinal tract, and regularizing the bowels and keeping this part of the body preventively more healthy. It also keeps weight under control.

| Thank you so much for the quick response. Lucky first showed signs of being ill on Sunday. Took him to the vet Monday (twice), then yesterday and again today. He has been given subcutaneous fluids twice and 4 medications. He was given an appetite stimulant yesterday and then sent us home with a bottle after he was diagnosed. They told me to give him one when we got home but I'm holding off. What concerns me is that after he was diagnosed the vet still suggests getting him to eat right away. Wondering if I should get a second opinion at this point. |

| I think you might want to consider taking Lucky to a specialist. He is older and something like pancreatitis could potentially kill him...it can a young dog as well; but he is vulnerable. Four vet visits sounds like a bit to make one diagnosis....when my vet is not sure, I run to the specialists. If your vet cannot refer you to one, you can do a search at: American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine > Home Please let us know how Lucky is doing!
