| my baby is having surgery for her leg today. My 1 year old yorkie broke her front leg 6 weeks ago. My vet put on a cast. At the 5 weeks mark there was no improvement. Turns out she should have had surgery from the get go (according to two other vets) so now she needs a plate and bone grafts. Im so mad at the other vet! So she is going into surgery with a top ortho surgeon today. (3200.00) Does any one have experience with the after care? She is a very sweet dog but has sudden bursts of energy where she goes cuckoo then will sleep for an hour...I just dont want to do anything to jepordize her recovery. I have a travel crate, a crate big enough for her an a small pee pad and a puppy apartment that I can make small enough just for her bed and bathroom. Im confused! I also bought a carrier thats like a purse that has the leg holes cut out! |

| Hi and Welcome to YT! So sorry to hear about your pup. Sending prayers and well wishes for a speedy recovery. I think your vet specialist can give you the best info on her aftercare, as each surgery is a little different. Best of luck today.

| I had a foster pup that went through this. He had the wrong surgery done by a general vet...just a pin in his hind leg and it never healed because those bones are large and twist so a plate is needed. His owner then, after he had this fracture for six months, turned him over to us. He had bone grafting done and a plate and he recovered very well! This is why I always strongly encourage people to take their pups to board certified ortho surgeons. Many times vets will offer other fixes to try and help people out financially, but in the long run it ends up costing more. You did not say if it was the hind leg or front...but either way you really should do your best to keep her activity very limited. If it was the front leg, I have been told that only 5% are successful if splinted and/or casted. Not very good odds. Yes, you definitely want to keep her activity to a minimum.....he was crated for quite some time. The donor site ends up being very painful so be mindful of that. Give pain meds as ordered and try to avoid touching that site...I found it to be very uncomfortable for him. Good luck....I will keep your baby in my thoughts and prayers.

| I am bringing pictures of all my beds, carriers, everything for him to look at and tell me whats best. Its the front leg. When it didnt heal my vet told me to amputate. I wont go into what I told her she could do..this surgeon said she should be just fine..I just feel bad that shes on rest for another 6 weeks. Im looking into rehab for her leg afterward. We have a place that does water therapy and when the surgeon gives me the okay Ill be bringing her. Im also looking into laser therapy. It supposedly increases healing. has anyone used it? As you can see ive done alot of studying sice I beleived vet number one... |

| I have used physical therapists in the past, but never for a fractured leg. The ones I have had did very well after the leg was repaired. The one I mentioned is fine now! That is awful that she suggested amputation as a first choice rather than a proper repair of the fracture! There are many people who opt for that, but if you can afford to repair it, that is the best option. The main issue with amputation is that IF a pup has a catastrophic injury to another leg later in life, then what?? She is lucky you are getting her the best in care. Good luck! I will check back later on to see how things went!

| Well I got a call from the vet office. (unfort the vet himself called my husband whos on a plane but he is going to call me later) Bottom line is IT WENT GREAT! SHE DID PERFECTLY. They were able to bone graft and get the plate in with no problems. I can pick her up tommorow! Im kind of afraid to get her so soon after surgery. They will keep her an extra day if I want...Im just scared.. |

| Yay!! So happy it went well!! I know you will be so happy to go get her tomorrow. Just do everything the vet and therapists say and she'll do just fine. Don't be scared.

| Any advice on how to keep her occupied? How much she can move with a plate? The vet called and said she really did excellent. He doesnt even want me to take her out of the crate more than once or twice a day at the exact same time otherwise they start barking and whimpering to get out. She also needs to wear the elizabethian collar for a couple weeks because there is no cast. Anyone who has been through this please any advice is welcome!! |
