| Worst Periodontal Disease Seen I just adopted a four year old yorkie a week and a half ago. I'm the fourth owner of this sweet dog. His first owner didn't take care of him. (The first owner tattooed his name on his stomach.) His second owner made him a stud. His third owner is moving to an apartment and can't keep him. I took him to the vet because I didn't have much medical information for him, except for proof of a rabies vaccination. He had infected anal sacs, so I have to switch his diet to a high fiber diet. The vet was also shocked at how horrible his teeth look. The plaque was so bad that the vet couldn't see the gum, but he assumes the root is exposed. The vet showed me examples of the disease and said that my dog's teeth are much worse than the picture! The infection has also caused something like strep throat. The vet said that my poor dog probably felt horrible because of the infection in his mouth. He's on antibiotics now to help the anal sac and mouth infections, and he will have to get 8 to 10 teeth pulled. The vet said that after the teeth are pulled, he should feel much better and go on to have a normal, healthy life. After blood and stool tests, his heart and other organs are fine. Has anyone else gone through this? How much does the procedure normally cost? |

Is there a certified canine dentist in your area where you could get a second opinion? Not saying that your vet is wrong or anything like that but sometimes there are options or procedures other than pulling teeth that regular vets aren't aware of. It would be a shame to pull so many teeth on such a young dog if it wasn't really neccessary. Also, you might ask your vet about giving a probiotic while he is on the antibiotics and see what he recommends. Antibiotics can kill the good bacteria in your system and without replacing them you can end up with a whole new set of issues. Last edited by my2boyz; 12-08-2012 at 06:38 PM. | |

| My lillymae had such rotten teeth that the smell permeated my whole house & smelled like something died in my house. Lilly was 9 yrs old when she came to me & not spayed, a mouth full of rotten teeth, a belly FULL of mammary tumors & she could not walk due to her back being out. Your baby will feel like a new pup after all is taken care of. |

| Thaks for making me feel better! Though concerned, the vet was confident that he would live a long, happy, life after meds and dental work. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Congratulations! I am so glad he is with you now. He will feel so much better when he gets all the rotten teeth out. Niiki a senior rescue I took in had such bad teeth they were rotted below the gum line. He had all his teeth removed and gum work done at the age of 15 and was like a new dog after. His breath was so bad you couldn't stand to me by him. He lived almost 4 more years with no problems. Also my Pixie is almost 7 and she has had 10 teeth pulled during 3 different cleanings. Now her breath and teeth look great. Pixie just had her last dental a couple of weeks ago. The cost was 325.00 and that included pre anesthesia blood work and 2 teeth extractions. It was 10.00 an extraction. Good luck and bless you for taking him in and getting him healthy.
