| Congestive Heart Failure I have not been on this site in awhile, just so busy all the time. I posted here when I first got Ruggles and he is almost 9 now. He has had a rough year. He was diagnosed with congestive heart failure about a year ago. Then 6 weeks ago, I got up to discover that he could not stand. He could not eat, and he could not stand to take himself to the bathroom. Took him to the Vet thinking it was his legs. They treated his legs, but took an xray and said his heart was enlarged and it was choking his airway. Started him on Vetmeddin and lasix. After a long 6 weeks, he is remarkably recovered. He is walking and playing again and he can breath well enough to take .25 mile walks. I know he could go at any time now. I am like the rest of you here. I am so attached to him that I got ill not long after he did from a stress related illness. Needless to say, it has also been, and continues to be, expensive. There were a couple of visits to the Vet when I knew were going to put him to sleep, but the Vet kept saying that he could recover. |

| I'm sorry you and your little one are going through this BUT, from what I understand, a pup can live a pretty long time with the proper meds/diet/exercise regimen. I wish you many more years of love with your darling!!!

| I am happy that he is acting and feeling better. I'm so sorry he is going thru this and that YOU are going thru this. I can't imagine how hard it is. Any of these little ones (and any of us really) could go at anytime. Just another reminder for us all to appreciate the times we have together and never take them for granted.

| I had a little girl that developed CHF when she was only 6 years old...I took her to a wonderful vet, and he put her on 3 different medications, two of which were able to be discontinued after about 4-5 years..........and my baby girl died in my arms at the ripe old age of 16! So, like someone else has said, with the right medications, these babies can do very well for many years. Watch his diet, watch his exercise level / tolerance, and your baby has a good chance of living many more years! |

| Ruggles Passed away My little baby passed away on Monday, July 27. He could no longer breathe and the vet said it was time to help him die. It was awful. They trust that we can save them from anything but we can't. The last year for Ruggles was not so good. I had to feed him by hand because he ate so fast, and had lost so many teeth that he was choking on his food. Three times, he passed out and we had to remove food that was lodged in his throat so that he could breath. A forth time, we could not clear his airway and his tongue turned blue, but on the way to the hospital, he finally cleared it himself. His medications had become very expensive at about $150 per month and his vet visits for oxygen or lasix cost us several thousand dollars. We still have Smarty, and he is doing OK, but has a collapsing trachea. He will be very lonely without Ruggles, who was his constant companion since he moved in with us 11 years ago. |

| So very, very sorry to read Ruggles could not win this battle. I know the pain you are in, I had to let my 17 y/o go 20 months ago. It is so painful to loose a beloved friend. Keeping you in my prayers to help give you strength to get you through this painful time. (((HUGS)))
