| Hypoglycemia My 10 week old 1.9lb female puppy had an issue today while outside playing. She laid down chewing on a little stick. She had just been running and playing. She yelped and I went to see if she was in ants. When I picked her up, she was limp. She stopped breathing. I rubbed and blew in her nose While running inside to call her vet. Once inside, she started vomiting. Vet said rub Cairo syrup on her tongue and gums. Her tongue and gums were white. We stayed on phone for 20 minutes and rubbed Cairo 2 times. She stayed lethargic and non-responsive so we took her in. On the way, she vomited and lost control of her bowels. After 40 minutes from the first incident, she started rousing up some. Vet had just seen her Friday. She got her 2nd shots and had a parasite so we started her on antibiotic. Vet said appeared to be hypoglycemia. I leave her food out all day. She gets treats. She also had a full tummy. I have 2 older yorkies and they never had this. Vet sent her home with a supplement to give 2 times daily. She has eaten some and slept on me mostly this afternoon. I am scared to death. I need some ideas to try and keep this from happening again. Have any of you experienced this? |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am sorry I am just seeing this. Since your puppy is so young I would make sure she is eating every few hours even through the night. My Cali had several episodes of hypoglycemia and it is so scary. I had to feed her every 2-3 hours for a couple of months, even during the night. I uses nutrical if she wouldn't eat or if she was stressed out. Hopefully it was an isolated episode and with the stress of shots and antibiotics making her more susceptible to hypoglycemia. I would also have blood work done just to make sure she doesn't have a liver shunt. If she is home alone all day it wold be a good idea to have someone check on her and make sure she is eating. Good luck and keep us posted.

| How scary So glad your little one seems better now. Leaving her food down all the time does not mean that she's eating enough, though. I almost lost my Luna in the same way and she had food down all the time. She just wasn't eating enough of it. I had to start feeding her every two hours, around the clock, for a few weeks until she started eating better. At her size, she needs to eat small frequent meals. Entice her with a little canned food mixed with her kibble and monitor how much she's eating. A dab of nutrical or similar stuff should help her appetite

| That is a frightening story and I'll bet your last nerve got totally blasted with that episode. I pray your little one is going to feel better and her problem is only hypoglycemia, as I think that is usually a temporary problem for the tiny dogs. If it is from some other disease process, I am sure sorry and I hope you can find what it is and how to prevent another situation such as this in the future! Poor little baby - I'll bet she was so weak and felt so bad. Keep us posted on how she is doing when you can.

| Hypoglycemia can be a sign of liver shunt I would have bloodwork done. If it were hypoglycemia the karo would have brought her out of it temporarily. To keep it from happening feed several small meals through out the day. Then if it seems to be coming on give nutrical or karo syrups. If that doesnt help there is more going on than hypoglycemia
