| A leg to stand on...(hurt hind leg) Hello my fellow Yorkie human companions. This is my first post here even though I joined months ago (when I received my first puppy in that of Yorkshire terrier I have named Sir Arthur). Like countless other Yorkies my little one has no fear, as a matter of fact his name,Sir Arthur, fits him to a T. With that being said my little one decided that he did not want to be brushed while being held and decided that jumping out of my arms was the way to go. All was well until the ground caught him and I noticed he did not jump up and run as is the norm for my fuzzy brave king-in-training. He injured his back left leg and made a very loud cry when he tried to walk. I took him outside to get him some air and to check him over in the sun light and he cried when he tried to use his back leg. I took a few deep breaths and picked him up and gave him as much love as I could to help him relax and to let him know everything was going to be alright. After bringing him in and placing in his pet pen I went to work online to find out as much about leg injuries as I could. My first thought was that it was broken and I could just picture his leg falling off and I was to blame. So many thoughts went through my mind along with the guilt and blame you befall upon yourself when such a thing happens to one so dear to you. After looking into all of the things that I, the bad and ruthless pet daddy (or so I felt), did I found out that it looks to not be broken after all. I did call my vet and spoke with them about what should be done and after telling them how he is acting and reacting they said it does not sound broken and that I should give it over the weekend and bring him in on Monday if he is still not using his hind leg by this time. I have since taken my little king-in-training outside to go potty and he even played fetch with me a little. While this was very positive to see it is still heart braking to see him not able to use his hind leg like he did just an hour ago. My Artie (that is what we call him until he grows into the king that he is to be) will let me hold him and rub on his hurt leg. I am able to move it but I do so very gently and very slowly. With this all said can anyone give me reason to question if my little king`s leg may be broken and we are just missing something? Yes, he will be taken to the vet come first thing Monday morning should he not be doing any better but I think with this being my first pup I just do not want him to go through any more pain then what he is already going through. That and I am a bit scared and feel ashamed that I let such a thing happen. Ok, now that I have shared with you almost a chapter of my pup tale I will step aside and look forward to anyone who may be able to offer some insight into this issue (and any and all suggestions to help his highness get back to his old self again). Thank you in advance and hope that you will only see happy tails wag and wet doggie kisses glore P.S. Artie is that of 8 months old if it helps matter any. -Sir Arthur and his human companion, John- |

| Welcome to YT, to both Sir Arthur and his faithful "footman" John! Iam sure you will be getting numerous suggestions on the best course of action for you to take....let me preface MY suggestion by saying I dont like getting caught in ER clinics/hospitals, over the weekend or middle of the night, if I can help it.....I have already paid for a wing added onto my ER vet. hospital and they have suggested I start putting in more parking! While I love to contribute to small businesses, and assist the local economy to the best of my ability, I do like to pay my bills at my own house so,whenever there is an accident or I just get nervous about something, I personally DO NOT ASSUME A "WAIT AND SEE" ATTITUDE! It has ALWAYS cost me about 3x's as much doing that, not to mention the discomfort the sick pup was enduring. I would go ahead and take the baby in, get the leg xray'd and see what needs to be done for him. That way, you are not at some ER at 2am on Sunday morning, with Sir Arthur and a leg that is swollen and hot to touch, and the little King-To-Be, feverish and out of sorts...... |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Welcome to your first Post! I am so sorry your wee Sir Arthur is in pain. Just like humans the RICE is the best way to go. Rest Ice Elevate Compress. I would Not do any ball fetching right now. Instead Vet bandage, cold compress and of course rest!. You can also do an Epsom Salt bath in the bathtub and combine that with water walking in tepid water. Rinse the boy after done; dry him off - he gets some good exercise and a hydrotherapy treatment I too am like Yorkie Mom - I'd be taking him tomorrow. It is not unusual for Yorkies to have Luxating Patella = loose kneecaps. If the kneecap goes out and stays out that is painful for anyone human or puppy On holding a yorkie I do make it a practice to wrap one front paw near to their chest in my hand. I also cuddle them close into my body. I use a grooming table, but I tend to sit and hold the yorkie to me when I am trimming nails. Good luck and hope wee Arthur heals up soon.

| Welcome. The first thing to do when your little one is hurt is to forget about googling about injuries and take Sir Arthur to a vet. Believe me, a stitch in time saves nine. Best wishes.

| Welcome and you have a great way with words. Artie is obviously loved. Please take him on in to the vet so they can do xrays. Why wait until Monday and leave this baby in pain? I'm not sure I agree with that advice of your vet...might want a new vet. These things can happen. Don't blame yourself. You are a great daddy to this king-in-training. Anyone can tell that by how you speak of him

| got to the vet before the weekend, and no playing fetch, would you want to be running around chasing things if you had a sprained ankle or a broken foot, probably not but dogs don't have the same common sense we do especially when you first have them and they are puppies. I will never forget one of the first days I had Lola and she was 4 months old, I stood her on a bar height counter right in front of me, and as I was pick up the harness that was laying next to her on the counter she walked right off it and fell to the floor. I do this now on a lower counter but she is now older and wiser and does not jump. Welcome to yorkie talk and I hope it is nothing serious.

| Our yorkie pup Percy also injured his left hind leg two weeks ago. There's this incident when he was chewing a roll of paper towel. I quickly grabbed it away because I don't like him getting used to chewing stuffs that are not supposed for him. So anyway, being the feisty and hard headed, strong willed trait of a terrier, he didn't like the idea of me grabbing his "new found toy" he jumped so high to grab the paper towel roll and landed hard on the floor. He was crying for about 5 seconds. I knew instantly he was injured. So i lifted him and checked his hind leg. He doesn't cry when I touch or massage it but he still do the limping when he walks. That's when we decided to bring Percy to the hospital vet at 9:00 at night. They did x-ray and found no broken bones. His vet says he probably just sprained his leg and prescribed him some pain killer and told us to confine him when we get home in a small crate for a week to minimize walking and strenous activity. We went home $450 poorer but we have our peace of mind. I wouldn't be able to sleep that night knowing we didn't do anything to seek for an immediate medical help. Percy is perfectly fine now, running like a speeding bullet. I suggest you bring him to a vet ASAP! They need to examine sir Arthur personally and not just over the phone. Meanwhile, you also need to confine him so that he won't be walking around limping and to prevent any further damage to the injured leg. Im praying and hoping that your baby will get well soon. |

| Update. Update: Sir Arthur is doing well and he has NO broken bone(s) in his hind leg. My royal highness does have to take one half of a pill twice a day for a week and he is confined in his crate for two weeks. But worry not, his highness does get to sit on my lap and get his petting while I am at home. All I can say is that I am happy that he caught onto his crate training early otherwise this would be a disaster...LOL. While I feel sorry for him as two weeks to a puppy must seem like forever, I also know it is for his best. I will bring this to an end and before I go I have to say "Thank You" to each of you whom took the time to reply. I got some very good advice from some of the post and I am for sure his highness would give you all puppy kisses if he could (but he can not as he is not allowed to be active for two weeks, did you not just read my post?...LOL). Thank you and goodnight; -Sir Arthur and his human companion, John- "Whoever said you can`t buy Happiness forgot little puppies." -Gene Hill- |
