| alt levels elevated Hi I am new on Yorkie Talk. I have 1 5 1/2 month morkie (yorkie/maltese). Her name is Baci and she weighs 4.6 lbs. She went in for her spaying yesterday and the vet called to say her alt levels were elevated (133). She suggested to do a bile acids test and said we could get results in 24-48 hrs. She sent her home on SAMe. We are so worried bc I keep reading she could have a liver disease. Does anyone know if 133 is high? What is norm? What else could elevate this reading? Has anyone been through this and if so can I get suggestions. Th |

| If you would like to PM me, I will give you my sister's email address...she just recently went through all of that with her morkie. He did end up having liver shunt, but is doing really good now! |

| Normally with a shunt more than one value will be abnormal. Anything out of the ordinary happen in the past month?

| Baci has no symptoms or signs of being sick at all!!! She is very playfull. She eats normal too. The vet said she is not sure if she in fact has a liver shunt or not...but the other tests will show if her liver is functioning. I have read the signs of liver shunts and Baci has none of them TG!! But what else could it be? What is the normal range does any one know?? Thanks |

| Did you ask vet about MVD - Microvascular Dysplasia? Happy was also in same stage (you can check our previous posts) and we got an ultrasound done. During ultrasound Happy was diagnosed with MVD. This can be controlled via low protein diet. Please post an update once you get the bile acid test results.

| Baci's results of her BAT were pre meal 2.7 normal and 78.6 high (norm being less then 20) my vet said since she has no symtoms, it could be toxins...something she got into that i am not aware of, or of couse something more serious. She suggested a ultra sound to rule out the serious ones!?!? she also said we could do a exray first. I have been looking up symptoms of liver shunt but thankfully Baci has none. If it is just toxins, I am wondering if the SAMe supplement that the Dr. put her on, will resolve the issue and she will be fine. Has anyone been in this situatuation where elevated levels turn out to be nothing or is it always a liver shunt or mvd...which I don't even know what that is...I am sorry to say |

I would suggest you to get ultrasound done ASAP. This would give you a clear indication (around 70-80% accurate) of whether it is a liver shunt or MVD. If its MVD you can feed your baby low protein food (Royal Canin Hepatic or Science Diet LD). Also, you can put her on Milk thistle. It is our opinion that liquid milk thistle is easy to administer rather than the tablets. You can find it at Pet Holistic Health Supplies | Naturopathic Pet Medicine | Holistic Vets and Veterinarians | All Natural Holistic Treatments Hope others might give you more opinions, but please update us with Ultrasound results. Sending prayers for your baby. Hope she recovers soon..

| Can Baci recover from MVD? My vet gave us SAMe and Baci does not want to take it. I have tried to cut it in half and in 1/4s. She wants no parts of it. Is milk thistle the same thing but a liquid? |

Numbers over 100 usually indicate a shunt, under 100 they're more likely to be MVD, which has the same symptoms of a shunt but there is no shunt. Dogs with MVD do well more often with just a low protein diet and no meds. Some may need the meds too. Some meds like prednisone can affect the Bile Acid Test. Denamarin is SamE and milk thistle combined. Marin is milk thistle and can be taken with Denosyl. Or you can get the homeopathic type at the health food store, just be sure to get the glycerine based, not the alcohol based milk thistle. All these nutriceuticals help the liver to cleanse itself of toxins and regenerate new liver cells. I use the Denamarin as I find it easier to pill my dog, and it contains both the SamE and the milk thistle.

| Kjc thx so much for your help. Can Baci have MVD w no symptoms? She isn't vomiting, sleeping a lot or has diarrhea. She eats little though...1/3 of a cup 2 times a day and sometimes doesn't finish all of it. What is MVD? Is that just a diagnosis that her liver could be small or not fully removing toxins? Is MVD a congenital disease? I spoke to the breeder and he wants me to keep him informed w US results. Here in NJ we are covered by Consumer Rights... pups that are adopted out if they are not healthy!?!?!? I am hoping he will help w vet bills. Could these levels be elevated for any other reasons beside LS or MVD? Thanks again!!! |

| S-Adenosyl (SAMe) Is what Baci has been on since Monday. She doesn't do well with taking it...it's been a struggle for me bc I'm not sure how to give it. I will ask the vet for script to get the liquid kind as you suggested at a health food store. also one of her favorite treats is a Salmon chewable treat..is that toxic (made in the USA)? Thx |

| KFC is MVD A congetinal disease? Bc here in NJ WE ARE COVERED BY THE STATE IF SHE WAS ADOPTED WITHOUT OUR KNOWLEDGE OF NOT BEING HEALTHY. Our breeder has been in contact w us and wants all tests results. He should be responsible to help w vet bills if it's congetinal. If I already posted this sorry;( |
