YorkieTalk Newbie! | Chronic Renal Failure diet Alternative to Hills KD Diet My 3 year old yorkie Tosh has been diagnosed with Chronic Renal Failure I am doing everthing possible to help him the vet of course prescribed the Hills KD diet which he really likes and he even gained 1 lb in the first 10 days. My concern is the quality of the ingredients, can a more natural diet be more beneficial than the KD? Have any of you tried feeding any other diets and had a successful results? He currently is taking Azodyl, Epakitin, pepcid and just yesterday I bought pet kelp...The pet kelp was recomended by another yorkie mom who lost their baby to CRF. Tosh has an appointment today to get tested again but his original Creatinine was 4.6 and BUN was 199 after 3 days of fluids his Crea went down to 2.2 then after 1 week of only 2x fluids Crea went up to 3.4 . He had 4 days of sub q and then every other day so I am hopeing the crea went down. I was recomended to give him a chicken and pumpkin diet but I dont want to switch foods unless the vet ok's it. Please any advice is greatly appreciated Thanks! |

| Honestly? Most on this forum probably know I'm not a huge fan of advocate of SD but... when it comes to getting a pup back to health, I would just listen to your vet. Chronic renal failure is nothing to mess around with, but I admittedly know nothing about the disease. Some of those RX foods can help in ailing pets who cannot tolerate anything else. You could also meet with a nutritionist and homecook, I am guessing.

YorkieTalk Newbie! | I am not going against vet recommendations however I am trying to do my own research because if it wasnt for my determination in keeping my furbaby alive I would have given up as soon as the vet told me that he would likely not survive the night and sent him home with KD and clamovox and nothing else when I asked her if I should give him distilled water she said "no, tap is fine" I have never given my dogs tap water and especially a dog with renal failure, that made me search and I found alot of great advice which I went to her with and after I suggested it she prescribed it so Thanks to people posting what has worked for them and there beloved pets I took him back the next day and asked for the 3 day treatment of fluids which helped bring his creo down and I was able to get Azodyl and Epakitin and pepcid and Pet Kelp so the only thing that still erks me is the KD being that the ingredients are not great yes the formula is based on Kidney Disease because its low phos and low protein I feel that there has to be a better alternative and I just want to hear what others have tried and how it worked for their furbaby. I dont just give him anything I make sure to ask the vet before giving him anything. Last edited by Captain Sparky; 08-09-2012 at 01:28 PM. |

| All I can tell you is that Hill's K/D and Purina N/F both work really well for renal failure. I have had more than one pup do amazingly well on those foods. I immediately saw changes in their BUN and Creatinine when they were on them. As Brit said, renal failure is nothing to mess around with. The only other option imho is a vet nutritionist and home cooking. You can find one at American College of Veterinary Nutrition

| I hope you are able to make sure your Tosh has quality of life above all else. Does the vet know what may have made your little guy sick? My Zoey was poisoned by dog treats. The Renal food is best if your guy will eat it. My Zoey wouldn't so I ended up home cooking with vet supervision and guidance. I was able to have a little over 2 additional months post diagnosis with her before her little body gave out. The vet did not give a very positive prognosis at the time of diagnosis. He was surprised the lived as long as she did with her crusty BUN and Creatinine. You and your vet need to work as a team. Value all your time together. Live each day with him to it's fullest. I could have tortured her by leaving her at the vets for dialysis and continuous IV infusions but she would have hated it. She loved her freedom to sleep when and where she wanted. She lived and died with her dignity intact. She took her first and last breath in my arms.

| My 16 yr. old Rosie is on Royal Canin Renal 14. I have found that she is more willing to eat it if I grind it up. Sometimes I have to hand feed the entire meal to her and other times I have to get her started and she finishes. Rosie has just been diagnosed so we're in the process of adding meds, etc. She's taking Azodyl and Epakitin. Wishing your darling Tosh the best.
