| New Owner, Puppy sick I purchased a yorkie from what I thought was a reputable breader who was recommended to me now I'm not so sure.... Kuma is 8 wks old and weighs approx 1pd. I picked up Kuma last Sunday the 29th. Realized on Monday he had fleas...washed with Dawn...fleas are gone. The last two days he seemed to be sleeping alot. Early this morning his poop changed from hard dark brown poop to light brown runny and now is mostly mucus tinged with a little blood. He doesn't seem to be eating or drinking much and I am very concerned I also noticed three little spots on his tummy tonight, one of them is a little raw (is that from the fleas that he had??) He was walking funny on and off tonight ...can't think of another way to explain it but like he was trying to keep from pooping as he walked.. I have tried contacting the breeder and she will not answer my calls/texts. I don't have any experience with a dog this young or this small but I am determined to give him a better life that what I know believe he came from He has an appointment tuesday for his next round of vaccines but I don't think I should wait until then.... Any info would be appreciated... is this normal after weaning (the poop changing) I don't know if he is pooping a bit of blood or it's from having such hard poop before. Very worried |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk. I am so sorry your pup is sick. You need to have a vet check the pup as soon as possible, and take a sample of his stool in a plastic bag if you can. One of my pups had the same symptoms, and it was coccidia, which is somewhat common, and sometimes comes on when the pup is stressed, such as going to a new home. This is serious, but treatable with proper medication, but don't wait around, the little pups can go down really fast. Your pup could also be experiencing hypoglycemia if he is not eating regularly, which would explain excessive sleeping and walking wobbly. You need to get him to an ER vet immediately. You need to learn how to identify and treat hypoglycemia, as it can cause severe damage or death. A reputable breeder doesn't let pups go to their new home until 12 weeks, and for the very tiny ones, even longer. Many people don't know this until they find themselves in a situation like you. Please please get this pup to a vet asap, and do post updates when you can. I'm praying for his recovery.

| You should get Nutri-cal for Puppies at the pet store, and give him a little to stabilize blood sugar & supplement when he is not eating. What are you feeding him? You might encourage him to eat by feeding small amts. of boiled chicken breast, finely diced, or supplement with goats milk (available in cans at grocery store, but dilute 1/2 with water.) He must eat, and must have water or will get dehydrated. Good luck.

8 weeks old is way too young, this baby should have stayed with it's Mom until it was 12 weeks old.

| Welcome to YT. Your baby needs to see a vet. I would get the pup in as soon as possible. The breeder should not have let the pup go at that age. I'm sorry you are having to deal with it but I would stop contacting her and see a vet. Hope your baby gets well soon.

My furkids Donating Member | welcome to YT and congrats on your new furbaby...As everyone said here...he NEEDS to be seen by a vet...NOW! He is a very tiny little guy and these little ones can go down very quickly. I am going through poop issues with all 3 of mine right now, They all had the same type poop you are describing, Bentley was the only one with blood in his. They ALL have Giardia and bacteria in their intestines. You really can't wait to get him to the vets You don't want him to dehydrate either. PLEASE let us know how he is doing. Good thoughts going out to you

| Update! Thank you so much for all the replies! We were first in line at the vet at 8am! He does have coccidia and a double ear infection they tested for parvo and that was negative thank goodness! Great vet (also a yorkie owner!) and two antibiotics later I think he is on the mend. I also purchased the nutri-cal for him He is on Royal Canin yorkie puppy, the vet suggested wetting it and that has worked, he is eating! I am so thankful that I found these forums, thank you thank you thank you! Kuma and I are off to take a nap....

| I am SO glad to hear you got Kuma in right away, got diagnosed, and are treating him. I hope he makes a full recovery, and has good health from here on. One thing you will find about YorkieTalk, is that we are passionate about our doggies, and we care deeply about each others too. I had a hard time sleeping last night worrying about your little Kuma, and prayed you'd get him in quickly. So when I woke this morning to see your update I was so relieved. Being tiny and young, adds a little extra responsibility to you, but it looks like you are on it, and know the importance of seeing a vet quickly when things start going wrong. Too often people wait and watch, and can lose their little ones. We'll look forward to hearing more about him, and watching him grow up

| Good news! I felt so bad for little Kuma when I read this thread. You're really lucky that your vet is a Yorkie owner. It's hard to find a good vet familiar with small breeds. Good luck with your new baby & welcome to YT! Quote:

| Kuma :-) Hi. So glad you asked for help here, took the advice of the posters, took your baby to the vet pronto and now she is diagnosed and on the mend. YEH!!! Hoping your baby gets well very soon and that you feel better too. Very scary for a new pup mom. She is very small and needed a great mom like you to nurture and love her. We would love to see pics of her when she is better, she must be so cute. |
