Please Help! Max - 14 year old, post tracheal stent surgery. Hello all, and thank you in advance for your help and advice. Max is my mum's 14 year old toy Yorkie. He has been suffering with collapsed trachea for 3 years with a swift decline in the 3 months before his surgery. The specialist said his trachea was mush and the worst he had seen, with one bronchial tube affected. Max's coughing was almost constant pre-surgery and it was a heartbreaking decision for my mum to make, but the stent was hoped to be a chance at improvement and despite his tiny body, he is a fighter. Anyway we are now 4 weeks post surgery. There have been some positives, a quieter less frequent cough, but poor Max is doped up to the eyeballs on codeine, prednisone, corvental. He is ACP'd when his cough becomes more frequent as he is supposed to cough as little as possible while he is healing so the stent doesn't move or break, which means he is out of it a lot of the day. Mum is trying to switch to a more holistic approach and started Garlic & Fenugreek tablets yesterday. My mum would like to stop the codeine tablets but I am not sure if after 4 weeks he would have a withdrawal reaction to a cold turkey stop of the codeine (prednisone is being weaned off gradually). Poor Max's tummy is swollen this evening which is why my mum is feeling like she needs to stop the codeine. Mum is feeling depressed tonight about his recovery. We are trying to keep her positive but any advice that may help Max would give us all a boost! Thank you so much!

Hi & Welcome to YT. Hopefully someone with experience with CT will be along soon. I do want to say that Garlic can be Toxic to dogs so I would not be giving garlic pills to him. If his tummy is bloated & he's constipated you can give him some Pure Canned pumpkin NOT pumpkin pie filling but just plain canned pumpkin a couple times a day. I'll be Praying he feels better very soon.

Thank you so much for kind reply. I am in the middle of a freak out because of the garlic & fenugreek tablets. I've spent the last 30 minutes reading for's and against's and I would always err on the side of caution and omit anything suspicious - my sincere worry in this instance is that we were hoping that this pill was going to allow Max to come off of all his other cough suppressants as they are making him so miserable. I called dorwest too and talked to an advisor who was most offended by my questioning and assured me that this is a medicinal garlic (.22mg per tab) and is sold to and used by vets around the country. I have read some really great reviews of the supplement, and we were hoping for a miracle for little Max in the form of somthing natural rather than the myriad of chemicals he is on that are keeping him half comatose. He is fighting so hard while my Mum is supporting him like a warrior, so we are still praying for that miracle! *I just called my mum and he's refusing to take his codeine this morning but seems brighter and his stomach is no longer bloated. I am going to do some more research on the garlic tabs - I've told my mum about your advise and all the side effects I read about and she is watching him carefully. Thank you sincerely! It is such a wonderful thing to have support and advice from people who are experienced and care so much x

Thank you so much for your prayers and concern, they are so very much appreciated! Max had an ok day yesterday. So strange that he coughs almost constantly but when he anticipates food he stops, it's quite bizarre to watch while he waits for something delicious.

| I'm praying for little Max. FYI: Pred can make the belly bloat as it can cause Cushing's. My little Yorkie was on it for quite a while till we weaned her and she had intermittent belly bloating. Now she's back on it but at a very low dose. I hope Max continues to improve!
