Need lactulose dosage I have a very tiny shihtzu puppy that my daughters dog gave birth to. She stayed with mom for the first 3 1/2 weeks but it soon became apparent that she was not getting her fair share. I believe she was a preemie and never was near the size of the rest of the litter. I started bottle feeding her Esiblac as a supplement but still let her stay with the siblings. after a few days I noticed she had a very strong ammonia smell and it was not due to urine from the others or herself. She also had encephaltus, her head was very swollen and she still had soft spots. I took her to a trusted vet and he tentavily diagnosed her with a liver shunt and she did have some sinus issues. He gave her a shot of long acting antibiotic with very little hope of survival. It is now 2 weeks later and Mia is a real fighter. After the shot she rallied and has been doing great. I noticed this past saturday evening that she was bloating. Poor baby cried all night in pain She got nothing but karo water sunday and monday she was feeling better. My vet is only open thursday fri and sat. There are other vets in town but relatively expensive and at the moment I am seriously strapped for cash. I am switching her to goats milk and I do have lactulose ( my former husband had end stage liver disease so I am well acquainted with the serious issues we are facing and why i have lactulose on hand) I do not have the dosage for lactulose for her and have been unable to find the formula. She has been passing some stool but not nearly what she should and until she starts digesting better she will be on lite feedings. Mia weighs 8.5 oz ( 245 grams) She was born fathers day, she doesnt even have teeth yet lol I have found recipes for diets that will work well with her once she gets a little bigger. If someone has the dosage or the formula to get the dosage I would appreciate it. Her next feeding is due and I really want to get the lactulose in her. Therese

I don't recommended trying medications on your dog without consulting your veterinarian first. Your dog's life is in your hands. I know money is tight, but wouldn't you hate to make a mistake and have your dog fatally ill or die because you didn't just take her to the vet or emergency clinic from the start? I can come up with a very rough ballpark dosage amount based on my Mom's dog. But, I would feel terrible if I gave you the wrong dosage and your dog got worse or died because you took my advice. Please, just take your baby to an emergency clinic instead!

Well for those that happen to have the cash to throw around it would indeed be best to take her to an emergency vet, Unfortunately it is 300.00 to walk into an emergency clinic up here. SHe was taken to the vet initially and tentatively diagnosed with liver shunt, unfortunately he will not be back in office for a few days when I initially wrote this. He will be in office tmorrow so I will be contacting him. As far as feeling bad if she didnt make it, of course I would feel bad, however since she was given -0- chance of survival initially, any day she has alive is 1 more day she wasnt supposed to have. I simply wanted an accurate dose or formula to reach that dosage on my own. I have been doing rescue for the majority of my life and have always had to rely initially on myself and instincts until assistance can be received from a vet. I am not just going off half cocked. I have a working relationship with the local vets but not 1 will give this type of advice or assistance without the office visit and blood work, sorry, once again I dont happen to have a couple of hundred bucks to toss out at the moment. Normally I would have funds in my vetting account but since I just had to replace my vehicle it wiped me out. Thanks anyways Therese

I have a yorkie that is 17 weeks old that was also just diagnosed with a liver shunt. She now weighs 1 lb 12 ozs. I give her 1/2 cc of lactulose every 8 hours with oral syringe. The vet also had me but hills a/d dog food for her that I mix with Rebound ( this is an electrolyte drink for dogs made by Virbac- I HIGHLY recommend this!!!) and then I syringe feed her 6 cc's 3 times a day. I also syringe her 6 ccs of Rebound alone every few hours ( she does drink on her own, but I do this to ensure she is getting enough liquids). I also syringe feed her and put in a bowl PediaSure (vanilla milkshake flavor) ...about 3 cc's 2 times a day. I also steam her ground beef with broccoli ... mainly broccoli that I put in a bowl for her to eat and she does. Karo syrup is not enough for your dog ... you need to make sure she is getting dog food ... but make sure it is the prescription diet or else she will be getting too much protein. My dog almost died from her liver shunt and was very wobbly for days because of it. Please, get the hills prescription food and Rebound for your dog ... it will save her life!! If you have any questions for me please feel free to ask as I am dealing with a similar situation. I prayer your baby makes it!
