Unlove My 3 month old in a cast :(

Hello all,
I am new to this site, and a new Yorkie owner. My fiance and I got Charlize about a month ago. She's a little over 3 months, and late last night, she jumped off my couch (for the millionth time) except she landed wrong and hurt her front left paw. This morning when we woke up, it seemed worse, and she wouldn't put pressure on it. I took her to the vet, and they x-rayed her and saw she broke 3 toes They put her in a splint and wrapped that, so it is like a cast. Its on her entire leg, and since she is only 2 pounds, she can barely walk or move around at all. She is miserable and its breaking my heart. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep her as happy as possible in the next 2 weeks that she has to wear this thing?? I tried playing with her, but since she can't move around, she didn't seem that interested. She is only a baby and is full of energy and wants to play all day long. I'm so sad

oh im so sorry. i might suggest you get stairs in all the locations which she jumps off of for future use. it might take a bit to get her used to them but it will help from preventing her from hurting herself. i have mutiple sets at my house for my two furr babies. i hope she feels better real soon.

Sorry to hear that. You can take her for walks in a doggy stroller. I know there are a lot of people who do this when their pups can't walk for whatever reason. It will give her the feeling of being out and about. Prayers for a smooth and speedy recovery. Oh! And welcome to Yorkie Talk!

Poor baby Your post makes me think about investing in some doggie stairs for my bedroom.

If it were me, I would try to hold her as much as possible. A pet sling might be a good investment if you don't already have one. I use mine all the time. I know that's not really "entertaining and/or playing" with her. But at least you'd be giving her attention. Also, maybe you could try some kind of chew toy? That way she wouldn't have to move. She could just sit in one place & chew.

Good luck!

Cry Thank you :)

Thank you for responding!

I will definitely get doggie stairs, I've been thinking about it, now its a no-brainer!!

I have seen the doggie strollers too....i'd almost rather just hold her and go for a walk in the park. I did that before she was used to the leash and seemed ok with it. Maybe I'll try that first, and if she isn't happy, I'll invest in a stroller!

The new chew toy is a also a good idea. since she is so young, she is teething, and she does have plenty of chew toys, but maybe a few new one's will pre-occupy her. Its so hard because she just seems so depressed and it's killing me. I want to do everything I can to make her happy.

My Prissy is in a cast on her back leg too. The first couple of days she seemed really tired and depressed, but she is really getting back to her normal self as much as possible now. She is getting around well and barking at the cat. She doesnt like the crate rest and is really dragging out her potty breaks and when we let her out to eat..It will just take a little time to get used to having something on her leg. I hope she does really well!!

I am so sorry for your little girl, I bet in a few days she will be walking on her cast

I would not be so quick to invest in stairs though, just because a dog will climb up them does not mean they will walk back down them. I had stairs for Lola by our bed but it turned out to be a mistake, she is so full of energy that she started running up them and then back down them, then she started skipping over several of the steps on the way down to the point she would mostly jump off the bed because it was quicker than going down the steps. I finally took the stairs away because I was afraid she would hurt her self jumping down, so now that she can no longer get up on the bed,
she can no longer jump down. I realize that your little one can get up on the couch so using steps could go either way, she might walk down them, but she most likely will still jump at least half of the time.

Welcome!! I am so sorry about your babys cast. It really is almost as big as she is.
I do not have stairs for any of my furniture. I have worked very hard to train Mina not to jump off of my bed. If she is on furniture,I usually have a hand on her and will put her on the floor. Stuff just can still happen, all we can do is try to choose what works best for our house.

Good morning! Did Prissy bite at it? They gave me a cone for her, but I REALLY don't want to make her wear that too. I bought her bitter apple spray, and she'll nibble here and there, but hasn't really bitten at it. I'm leaving her today in the crate alone for a few hours, and I'm worried the cast will be off when i return...what do you think? Thanks!

I don't remember where I read this, but there is some research supporting that ramps are easier on the joints than stairs for dogs. I've used both with young and old dogs and they seem to prefer the ramps once they know how to use them. For example, there are a few steps down from my parents' back door to the outside. Half of those steps have a dog ramp over them. Their little dogs almost always use the ramp instead of the steps.

So, you could consider getting ramps in locations where you fear your dog might jump or where there are already stairs.

Leg injuries from jumping off of couches and beds are too common with Yorkies. They think they are invincible and will jump off of surfaces 4 feet off the ground! You can train your dog not to go on or off these surfaces without your help/permission. Or, you could train them not to go on these surfaces at all.

My Yorkie does not have access to our bed. She sleeps in her crate in our bedroom at night. We will play with her on our bed, but we watch her and make sure she doesn't jump. We even have collapsible bed rails at the foot of the bed and on one side. This way, we only have to be vigilant about keeping her from jumping off of one side of the bed while playing with her up there.

Salty (R.I.P) tore a tendon in one of his legs and wore a cast for a long time. He was depressed too and it took him awhile to learn how to walk with it. Before long, he was running around the backyard and barking at the neighbor dogs just like his old self. He could run surprisingly fast despite his cast.

In the meantime, keep your puppy company. Give her toys and chew things to keep her occupied while sitting or laying down. Encourage her to walk on her own with the cast so she will feel independent again. Taking her on walks in a stroller is also a good idea.

I'm so sorry Charlize was injured jumping off your couch, and I pray she recovers soon!
I think Yorkie's are pretty notorious for jumping because they're so fearless! At least I can say this about my little dare devil, Yazmin.
She's been sleeping in my bed since she was a small pup and because my bed sets so extremely high from the floor, I feared one day she would either jump or fall off and get seriously injured or worse!
I immediatly searched for step stairs but couldn't find anything tall enough for the height of my bed.
I found this Seller on eBay who makes ramps in either standard or custom sizes for dogs or cats. I now have ramps in the bedroom and 3 in my living room for my chairs, and the couch. I also feel they're much safer for Yazmin because they're carpeted and she flys up & down the ramps without missing a beat and has not tripped once ! Yazmin was afraid to go up and down the 1st. ramp for the first hour or so but once I inticed her to come up for a treat, she mastered it in no time!
Because these ramps are custom made, it usually takes 2-3 weeks to get one but I'm sure if you contacted the Seller and told him about Charlize, he may have ramps already made in standard sizes or could make a custom ramp for you fairly quickly. I know from personal experience working with him, he was very accommodating towards me and I received my ramps quickly. Also, if you know someone personally who does carpentry work, maybe you can have them build a ramp for you! Just a thought.

Awwww, your baby is adorable! I'm so sorry she's injured, poor thing I think that just holding her and talking to her, and holding a new chewy for her can go a long way toward making her happier She will be back to her spunky self in no time
