| Sugar's enlarged heart and collapsed trachea I've not been posted for ages... Sugar, my furbaby is 3+ this year. This thread is rather long, I'm sorry..... Last year February, Sugar started to cough after we came back from vacation, we put her in a pet hostel as no one could help us to take care of Sugar for a few days. Sugar had this Kennel cough as told by my regular vet (in a clinic), and he gave her some coughing syrup and said would be fine. The 2nd day, Sugar coughed so bad and fainted at home, my mum was at home (I was working) and saw it, immediately she rushed her to hospital, I later joined my mum. The vet suggested to do an x-ray, the result came out and vet said Sugar's heart is larger than usual, if it's the case, Sugar wouldn't live for long. They recommend to do ultrasound on the heart. After the result came out, vet said although Sugar's heart size is abnormal, but ultrasound shown nothing much to worry about. Vet gave Sugar some coughing syrup and antibiotic. Sugar finished her medicines about a week or so, she's doing fine but I noticed she still have this dry coughing sound when she got excited or frustrated. But other than that everything was perfectly fine. She didn't seem to be sick or so. ....Until 2 weeks ago, there came an uninvited guest, a bee..Sugar bite it and immediately my mum (I'm at work) rushed her to our regular vet, after injection and pill, Sugar's fine. Last Friday I took Sugar for her annual jab, things were still fine. Yesterday mum called me said Sugar is feeling unwell after she ate some chestnuts, its only 1/4 of 1 nut, she shown food poisoning, tongue became purple, and vomited a few times, she rushed her to hospital again as our regular vet is not operating his clinic on Sundays. The vet in the hospital gave Sugar some medicine (believed it's charcoal) and Sugar was fine after that, again the vet mentioned about her dry honking voice, and we decided to leave Sugar there for another x-ray. This noon we thought to take the result of x-ray and bring Sugar home, but this time the senior vet of the hospital wanted to meet and discuss... I had a very bad feeling... The x-ray shown Sugar has an enlarged heart and also collapsed trachea, I mentioned Sugar did ultrasound and x-ray last year, and asked for the record, he said last year Sugar didn't suffer from collapsed trachea and her heart is larger now, it's different, he wanted to do another ultrasound and compare with last year result. But he wanted us to be prepared for the worst... he said Sugar will have to go for medicines. But there's no guarantee how long Sugar can still lives, it could be a year, or 2 if lucky, it's a bonus to live with enlarged heart. I'm really depressed.... he suggested Sugar to go for low sodium diet / low salt diet, I'll have to bring Sugar home tomorrow, I have no idea what foods I can give it to Sugar, as vet said boiled chicken is not good. I've been crying since this noon until now, my eyes are swollen and I hardly talk.. Please pray for Sugar, I only wish I could buy her more time

| I am SO sorry. I have had pups with collapsed trachea and it is a very difficult condition. All I can say to you is to give her the meds as prescribed and feed her whatever they suggest. Perhaps there is a prescription food for her? Keep her in cool and relaxed conditions so as not to stress her. I will definitely pray for your sweet Sugar and also for you. Take it one day at a time..that is all we have. Today.

| I will keep Sugar in my Prayers. Also the heart can often look much larger on an x-ray then it actually is & are you using a collar or a harness on her ? as small dogs should never be walked with a collar as it alone can damage the Trachea. |

| Are you having her seen by a cardiovascular specialist? I would have her diagnosed by a specialist in that field....I think your prognosis may be as little bit better than you have been given....Either go to a vet school or go to a heart/lung specialist...they can get that trachea prognosis accurate for you also....then they will know what meds to give for the heart....I had a little girl go into congestive heart failure and rupture a leaflett on a valve so she was having blood pool and back up in her heart...she also developed an enlarged heart....not severe, but enlarged non the less...they started her on Lasdix, Vasotec, and low sodium diet....she was on her meds daily for 4 years, then she didnt need them any more....she lived to 16 years old....and was diagnosed at 9! Seek out experts in the field and take their direction and what they tell you about your babys prognosis...it may not be as grim as you have been led to believe..... |

| Thank you for all of your comments and concerns, sorry for the late of reply to this thread. I was busy arranging things and I've brought sugar for review last week. She is doing fine, but when she got excited or nervous, the dry honking voice is there. Vet put her on Hill's prescription k/d (not h/d) as we only have k/d in my country. I have no idea what to give Sugar other than k/d kibbles as she can only consume low protein and low salt foods. Sugar loved to eat, but she didn't like the new kibbles at all, I have to spend time and hand feed her, sometimes she's too hungry she will eat it all but I know she didn't really like the new kibbles. She was on Orijien and Acana before everything happened. Thank you for your best wishes, you are right, it's not a death sentence as long as with the proper medication. Just the cost for ultrasound, x-ray etc has already cost me thousands (about usd500), I'm not a rich person, I can foresee I'll have to spend more in the near future, but I'm not complaining, I only wish Sugar can stay with me for many years to come. I love Sugar (my mum loves Sugar very much too), I only wish for the very best of her..

| Glad to hear you were able to bring Sugar home and that she is at least eating - even if she isn't loving it at the moment. Sounds like you have things under control for now and I hope all goes well. Yes, these little dogs with health problems can be quite expensive but we're in it for the long haul so . . I have to bite that bullet as well.

| I am happy to hear that Sugar is at home. As for the K/D, you might want to call your vet and ask him if you can use Purina N/F instead. It is pretty much the same food...but I have found that pups like the N/F better than the K/D. I have always used the canned food of those. Continued prayers for Sugar.
