| Need help with new puppy! Hey everyone, just joined. I picked up a 8 week Yorkie puppy last month from a breeder and brought him home. From the get go we could tell he wasn't acting normal. He wouldn't eat a thing, wouldn't go to the bathroom and was just acting depressed. A couple of days later he looked like he was about to die so I rushed him to the ER. Turns out he had hypoglycemia and his blood sugar was 26. We proceeded to force feed him but again he didn't look normal. I decided to let the breeder hold on to him for another month until he matures more as I thought he just missed his family. Fast forward to last night where I picked him up again at 13 weeks. He has gotten much bigger and the breeder told me he was now filled with energy and eating A LOT. I bring him home and it starts again. He has absolutely no energy, he will not walk, he will not eat and he just lays in his cage with his head down and his eyes open. He does drink water though. Does anyone have any suggestions. I'm feeling horrible just watching him act like this. Any tips to make him eat his dry dog food? I really don't want to get him hooked on the canned AD food. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! |

| Bottom line is, HE HAS TO EAT!! I wouldnt worry so much about him getting hooked on canned food...if he doesnt eat and he keeps having low blood sugar episodes, he may die, so right now, settle for the lesser of two evils, and let him get hooked on the AD canned food....when he gets healthy and is eating and not so stressed out with the new home , new family, new routine, etc., THEN you can concentrate on the minor things. You MUST see that he eats...if you have to hand feed it to him off the end of your finger, or he will have a seizure and one of these times, he may not make it. Did your breeder tell you to have Nutri-Cal or Nutri-Stat on hand at all times? That is a sugar supplement......if I was you, I would give him about 2 inch long strip....he can lick it off your finger or you can put a 1/2" strip on the roof of his mouth...let him get that down, repeat until you have given him the 2 in strip....need to do that every 4 hours around the clock....that will keep his blood sugar up so he doesnt get into trouble at night and you wake up in the morning and find him lifeless...Hypoglycemia is a very serious problem and it will cost him his life if you dont stay on top of it. |

He needs to be fed every 3 hours around the clock!! That is 24/7...it is not forever, but if you don't do that now, this puppy is going to die.

| Update: I tried feeding him the canned AD and he wouldn't touch that. As a last resort I put the dry puppy food on the floor and he started feasting on it. I don't understand it though. He wouldn't even look at the food when it was in his bowl or in my hand but as soon as it touched the floor he starting eating it. He looks like he has plenty of energy now! |

Senior Yorkie Talker | Mix some chicken brooth in with the dry food. Warm it up a little and let sit on the food before you give it to him. Give him some Pedlite water for baby, to help keep his blood sugar up, our Vet told us they should drink 2 shot glasses of water per day. Strawberry Yogurt is good to but be sure it's all natural |

| It kind of sounds like he might just be adjusting. See if you can get him to eat the canned food if you warm it up just a little and put a little water in it so it's moister. How much does he weigh?
