♥Trained by my pups♥ Donating YT 500 Club Member | Okay need information Not the best case but what's done is done. There is this yorkie that had kidney stones. Those were removed. She developed an infection. The vet said we should spay her and this would help with everything. Okay the gal tells the vet my dogs have mated in the last month. They do not do a pregnancy test. The male is neutered the same day as the spay is scheduled. They open the female and she is pregnant. They close her up still pregnant. Give her some antibiotics and say well not sure how good of a chance these pups have now.. I know most will say they should have spayed her. And maybe so. But she was not. Does anyone have any ideas. Will she be able to carry these pups. And will it be safe for her and the pups. I understand this is a horrible situation. But if anyone has any information it would be appreciated. This is not my dog

YT 1000 Club Member | Oh my goodness what a nightmare. Why didn't the vet do an ultrasound before the surgery? Seems like that would have been a natural process especially since the male was not neutered and the female not spayed. I pray she will be able to carry and deliver healthy babies (and neither mom or babies are now at risk).

♥Trained by my pups♥ Donating YT 500 Club Member | I am so scared for this dog. I am hoping it can all work out. Was hoping someone. May have had a similar story. Yes she is one upset person at the vets. As she told them they had mated. I feel this is so sad that this dog was every opened up. Without testing if she was pregnant.

| No Matter the outcome I'd be changing Vets. This one sounds incompetent |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Sry I have had no experience; but why did they just close her Up? Not at least call owner to see if she wants to go ahead with the spay. I think she should get to a reproduction vet, and also be prepared for a C section. Idiot vet! And I concur, get another vet.

♥Trained by my pups♥ Donating YT 500 Club Member | I have no doubt she will never use them again. My concern is if this dog can carry these pups safely now. And if the pups have a chance. I personally said I would be very scared if even one of the pups would die inside her I can not imagine the problems then.

♥Trained by my pups♥ Donating YT 500 Club Member | Nobody. I know this is a awful case. Why would you let them mate after she just had surgery. I am not saying at all it's a good thing. Just really wondering if this can be okay

| I feel so sad for this dog... I have no advice because what's done is already done. She could have avoided this by not mating her dogs. If she was a responsible owner, they would be spayed and neutered.

| Set jaw. Take a deep breath. Remember this is NOT a question of "if" or "how" or "why", but what happens now. Focus on this momma and her unborn babies. What would I do??? First: change vets immediately, you need a vet that has more fore thought about where we are NOW, and a safe resolution with the momma, then puppies, in mainframe. Second: I am thinking what exactly is worse case scenerio.... (A) the babies will die, undelivered, and momma will ....(a) reabsorbe the pregnancy. / or (b) develop an infection from undelivered dead puppies.....OR....(B) the pregnancy will continue until term and mom will deliver a litter of pups, that will (a) be healthy.....or (b) have deformaties from anesthesia administered during week ? of the pregnancy. (You need to know exactly what week you were in when that momma was sedated/anesthetized so you will know exactly what was developing in the fetuses that is possibly going to be affected/malformed.) Thrird: Watch this momma every minute of the day, until she reaches her due date. Monitor her blood work for signs of infection. Monitor the developing babies for normal development. If it is determined that the babies are no longer viable, the vet can (a) medically induce delivery or (b) section the momma and terminate the pregnancy and clean out the abdomen(spay), and start momma on antibiotics to be sure she does not develop a serious infection. I do not know if this even answers the question you asked!! I am just trying to sort this mess out in my OWN mind! This is what I would be thinking about my own dog if I had ever ended up in such a situation...to late for repremands or criticizing...we are now in CRISIS MANAGEMENT....I HATE CRISIS MANAGEMENT!!! HAVE TO MOVE TOOO FAST!!! GIVE ME CRISIS AVOIDANCE!!!!...MUST BE THE ICU NURSE IN ME. Whatever the process going forward from this point, please keep us posted on this unfortunate situation....we are concerned, regardless of how or why it ever got to this point! Give momma a kiss and pat for me! Last edited by Yorkiemom1; 05-11-2012 at 05:53 PM. |

♥Trained by my pups♥ Donating YT 500 Club Member | I got a little more information. She was sedated for surgery. They did open and close her back up without calling the owner.. And they think she is four weeks pregnant. She said she will watch close and if mom is in any danger she will abort the puppies to save her life. I will keep you posted and thanks so much for your reply. I just have never heard of this before. My daughter who worked with a different vet said she saw this happen with cats. And they would usually just do the spay.

| This whole scenario is shocking and unprofessional on the vet's behalf. I would think the vet would understand that sedating a dog, learning of pregnancy and closing it back up without aborting the pups will ultimately put the dog in danger, in addition to the babies. If anything bad happens, the vet could be facing a significant lawsuit as well as reprimand from the veterinary board. |
