| Colds and Yorkies - any advice? For those who haven't read my intro, a week ago tomorrow I welcomed my darling 3 lb Yorkie, Benjamin Button, into my heart and home. He was on the "rescue only" death row list at the local shelter - he has no teeth and they felt that made him unadoptable. Thankfully I was able to enlist the help of fellow rescuers and get him out of there. Monday he was fine, Tuesday morning I took him to the vet for a general wellness exam - at that point there was nothing amiss, we did a senior wellness panel, full thyroid panel, and a UA just to be sure. Everything came back perfect. Now after leaving the vet I did have errands to run, so he went all over with me, and it was kind of windy out. That evening he started sneezing a little and I didn't think much of it since he'd been out with me in the wind. Wednesday he was still sneezing, and I called the vet - he said probably allergies and said to give 5 mg of Benedryl 3x a day, and to get my humidifiers running and put some Vicks in them. I've been doing that but he seems to be getting more and more congested every day. It has been cooler then normal and rainy the last couple days, not sure if that's relivant or not since with him not feeling his best I've had him using a puppy patch instead of going outside in the rain. He acts ok still, he's got a great appetite - he'll eat anything! Has a hard time eating alot of things at his size with no teeth but it doesn't stop him from trying! But the sneezing, coughing, and congestion seem to be slowly getting worse. I took his temp and it's normal (101.3), am I worrying to much? Or should I take him to a different vet for a second opinion? Is there anything else I can do to help with the congestion so he can breathe better? I'm actually a vet tech and see so many of these tiny dogs develop pneumonia that I'm a bit worried this will turn into something more serious, but am I just bring over-protective?

| There was one time that I can remember that I was sure Muffin (rip) had a cold. She behaved in the same way. I cannot remember what we did now, because it's been so long ago. I looked this up and I hope it helps you with your little guy: How can I tell if my Yorkie has a cold/flu I have a 3 pound - JustAnswer How can I tell if my Yorkie has a cold/flu? I have a 3 pound yorkie, just turned a year old. She does not seem to be feeling well. We recently had a small accumulating snow and she was running/playing in it but just for a few minutes while out going to the bathroom. We have also had a major temperature drop. She has been sniffling/sneezing alot for the past few days since. I worry since she is so little. What should I do? Is this something that will pass or will she need medication? Hi there I'm Dr Goodall and I'd like to help. aegoodall : It sounds like Coco has rhinitis or sinusitis. This means inflammation of the nasal cavity or sinuses. This is common in dogs and is almost always viral rather than bacterial. It is effectiviy like the human common cold, and as we all have experienced, usually the doctor does not recommend antibiotics! aegoodall : Acute (meaning sudden and short lasting) rhinitis is characterized by nasal discharge, sneezing, pawing at the face, and when more severe respiratory noise when breathing, open-mouth breathing, and/or difficulty in breathing. aegoodall : Sometimes the condition is complicated by secondary bacterial infection, when a more pussy and mucousy discharge may be seem from the eyes and nose. aegoodall : There is also the possibility that the symptoms are due to other causes such as: A foreign body stuck up the nose such as a grass seed, a tumour, a fungal infection or even parasites (cuterebra grub). aegoodall : I would advise not doing anything and waiting for it to resolve (may take a week). However, if Coco stops eating, or if she starts having trouble breathing, or if a pussy discharge is seen, I would advise visiting your vet.

| Problem with asking the vet I work for is that I work in a cat hospital. She doesn't like giving advice about dogs because she doesn't know much, as there's many things that work well in cats that dogs don't respond to and visa versa.

| Ya, cats are completely different! Been awhile since I've worked in an all-animal clinic, and am constantly reminded at work just how different they are!

| That's ok. I went back and saw it. Thank you. I just missed that. I kept looking at it, but I must be blind. I'm very tired today after worrying about all of the storms yesterday, so I'm operating in a slow mode today.
