| Please Help!!!Yorkie always looks under the weather after collapse! My yorkie coco collapsed about four days again out of nowhere. She was running the first minute, the next minute she was lying on the floor not moving but was conscious and had no motion on her face (there was no vomit but she pooped a lot in unusual spots right before). I sent her to vet asap, and she ended up staying in the ICU for two days with iv. The vet did blood test, urine test but not x-ray and did not have a clear diagnosis, they were saying she had gastroenteritis and her urine had calcium crystals and needed special diet. She looked better so we took her home. Coco did not like science diet uv prescription food but she was eating regular science diet can food well and chicken jerky. She has healthy stool and pees regularly as well. However, she IS NOT MOVING TOO MUCH. Especially when she went to backyard she just sat at one spot motionless compared to before she would be running around. I notice she still look like she is in slight pain when I lift her. Is this just recovering? Or should I take her to another vet? PLEASE HELP!!! |

| Oh, yes, get her to another vet. A Yorkie just sitting there and acting differently after having a collapse and being unconscious needs follow-up and likely with someone who can take a fresh approach to the case.

| I would be at the closest vet school as quick as my short fat legs could get me there! They have teams of vets and all the latest equipment at their disposal.....please get her to a vet school....you KNOW she is not right....if the vets you are taking her to can not find anything specifically wrong with her, then you need to move on.....this is NOT normal....you need to find out what is going on.... |

| She does not like her new diet dry food. I don't think the jerky is recalled. I only gave her tiny of it to test if she still has appetite. And it looked like she still has. I am currently trying to help her recovery but special diet obviously not the answer right now. Do you have any suggestions? |

| Most of the time they dont like that special diet food (its very bland) I would not give the chicken jerky treats. I spent $2000.00 dollars almost killed my (2). I would get her to another vet. Recall of chicken jerky treats Vitals - 3 big brands may be tied to chicken jerky illness in dogs, FDA records show |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Your best chance for an informed diagnosis is a good vet hospital/school. I have no idea in the States where you live, but if you at least give a State, someone here can suggest some good hospitals/vet schools for diagnosis and treatment. And I would urge you to follow that route.

| hello and welcome to yorkie talk! i am so sorry to hear that you're here under these circumstances. so many yorkies and all breeds of dog have been getting terribly ill from chicken jerky treats. we have been seeing this over and over on this site so please definitely take that into consideration. waggin' train is made by purina and says made in the usa but on the back in fine letters it states that it is made in china. they are very deceiving. there are recipes on yorkie talk somewhere on how to make chicken jerky treats at home and it is very easy. if the drs have not gotten a definite diagnosis, if this were my baby i would be taking her to a specialty clinic for a second opinion. preferably one that is 24 hours. here is a link to find a board certified specialist in your area. ACVIM please put a call in to the vet and ask if you could give her plain boiled chicken breast or anything else. you should definitely inform them that your baby will not eat the food and find out what is safe to give her. when my nika had pancreatitis she would not eat the prescription food either, so that's what my vet suggested along with karo syrup to keep her blood sugar from dropping. but you would need the vet to ok that for your situation... please keep us posted on how your little one is doing and know that your baby will be in our thoughts and prayers!! again welcome to yorkie talk!!!!

| i also wanted to add that while the fda has sent out warnings to pet owners, none of these brands of jerky treats have been recalled. they have been directly linked to deaths and illnesses but are still being sold!!! in fact, last time i went to petsmart, there they were in a huge display first thing when you walk in! the lady at the register checking me out apparently didn't have a clue about any of it.

| Thanks for you all, I am certainly not giving her any of those treats, and I am taking her to another vet soon. I am so not convinced about the first diagnosis we got, gastroenteritis. I googled a lot and see most dogs had this either vomit or had diarrhea, she had neither. The second diagnosis was crystalluria. I am not sure if this is really caused by her diet (since I gave her regular science diet all the time which was supposed to be the best dog food) or caused by the iv she got in the hospital (I don't know any pet medications, if you had experience please let me know, thanks). Thanks again everybody. |
