| drinking excessive water??? Good Morning All, It's been a while since my last post, hope everyone is well! My girls and I recently moved to our new home, we left hubby behind and things are well and happy to be back on YT. I'm sorry my first port is a health concern. with my 2 1/2 yr old biewer who is drinking excessive water which of course leads to frequent urination. Gracie has always been a good drinker but the past month and a half it seems excessive. She is the most playful and active of my 3 girls. As far as eating sleeping and pooping she is perfect. I have a vet appointment and wondering what to expect and if there is anything I can research in advance. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks, wendy

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Excessive thirst can be a sign of diabetes. It's also a factor in how much humidity is in your home and how much they are panting. Dogs get rid of water every time they breathe and if they pant a lot they will need more water, also a dog who is exercising more will need more water as well as a dog who eats dry dog kibble rather than canned food. Do you have any idea how much water a day you dog drinks? My guess is that because she's exercising more she needs more water and that's perfectly normal.

| on a typical 12 hour day my 3 will drink about 8-12 oz of water. Lately when I arrive home from work at 5pm their 16 oz bowl is empty. My girls are 4, 6 & 7 lbs. The heat has been off for a month and I run a humidifier 24/7 for my little one who has very dry skin. do you think 16 oz is excessive?

| Just to add as well, certain dry kibbles/ treats depending on their protein and salt levels can increase drinking. Gizmo got a hold of Canidae kibble and it cause him to drink like a mad man.

| It is good to take her to the vet for some basic blood work, to rule out any conditions first. It could just be the stress of the move, or the humidifier creating more thirst. I had a diabetic dog and he did start out with excessive thirst as his first symptom, but I wouldn't jump to any medical conclusion until you see the vet. If they are out of water by the time you get home, I would suggest a larger bowl, just to be sure all their water needs are being met, and if she is drinking excessively right now, it may mean one of the others is not getting their share and that is why it is running out. Sending good thoughts for your vet visit

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I agree w/ what others have mentioned...bloodwork, rule out diabetes. The only other thing I'd mention is Cushings....I really do not there is much of a chance this would be Cushing....but since it was one of Wylie's very first Cushing's symptoms...just thought it might be worth mentioning. Keep us posted !

| Okay, I am having the same problem. So far we have done a urine test and my new addition Tango has a high white blood cell count in his urine. The doctor mention diabietes but wanted to start with the urine first. He was put on Clavamox for 10 days to see if he improves and then they want another pee sample. First one of the morning to see if he can concentrate it. I am worried. He is only 20 weeks old. :-( I've read that urinary tract infections are not that common in males so now I'm worried that it is not that.

| I am bumping up this old thread with a concern of my own.... Domo is almost 4 months old, he weighs 1lb 15 oz. He is eating blue buffalo puppy. When he came to us from the kennel, he was eating eukanuba. He drinks and urinates excessively. I'm talking he'll urinate quite a bit, and then 5-10 minutes later urinate again, quite a bit. I took him to the vet and mentioned this. The doctor said that this is signs of kidney issues and diabetes, but he'd never seen either of those in a pup so young or so small. Should I be worried still??? He's been living with us for 1 month now. Idk what to do. I mean I checked with the vet, and he told me not to worry, but I am still worried.
