| How Long to heal from LP? Hi folks I have a 3 1/2 year old yorkie, Pixie, who had surgery for a Luxating Patella on Feb. 14/12 -- about 5.5 weeks ago. How long should it take to be able to go for walks of a few blocks without being in major pain that evening? It was a Grade 3-4. I am wondering now if I was premature and feel guilty but she was in pain before and the kneecap seemed to lock out more often than not. As it is now I can't let her go for walks at all -- in house walking around seems all she can manage and even then she limps. Am I expecting too much too soon -- hope you have positive news! Also do you recommend asking the vet for any pain medicine? It is hard seeing her in pain. Thanks. Merle and Pixie |

| Sounds like there is a problem here. I think your vet needs to reaccess her surgery. I wouldn't think she should need any pain meds this far from the day of the surgery, and at most maybe minor stiffness but not pain or limping.

| I would definitely take her back to the vet. Georgie was able to take walks I want to say after a couple weeks. I will also say all furbabies are different, but I think a visit to the vet wouldn't hurt. She shouldn't need any pain meds at this point.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | My pixie had lp surgery about 2 years ago. She was almost 4 and had grade 3 but was having a difficult time walking. I too always second guessed if I should have put her through it but she did well after surgery. My Pixie was able to walk without a limp after a couple of weeks for short periods and only needed pain medication for a short time. I would have the surgeon check her out to make sure everything is ok. I hope she feels better soon.

| I would get her into the vet and see what is causing that limp and have the question of whether or not she is in pain addressed fully. I would never assume a dog is not hurting if it is limping.

| Up to 12 weeks for full healing of tissues. My yorkies both walked weeks after surgery. I have one now 7 weeks post surgery of Grade III LP and cartilage and ligament tears who is fully weight bearing and walking like there is nothing wrong and has been for weeks, but every dog is different. Did a board certified surgeon perform the surgery?

| Three weeks after LP surgery Callie was supposed to take two five minute walks for a week and the next week it was 10 minutes and it kept going up every week. Her surgeon had released her at 8 weeks and said she was good to go well a week or two later she was limping again and in terrible pain so we took her back to the surgeon and they found out her pins they put in were hurting her so they had to take them out and then after a week of pain meds and leash walks to the potty she was doing great again and now only limps if she has done a massive amount of exercise. I would take her back to the surgeon and let them check and make sure everything is alright.

| P.S they can limp for up to a year. My dog limps for a few mins after rest, but then he doesn't limp unless he overdoes it. I've also used metacam on those occasions for a little comfort.

| More re Pixie and LP Hi - thanks for the personal experiences, everyone. I talked to the vet this morning and he says it will take 2-3 months and possibly 4-6 months before Pixie is back to normal. We were in to see him weekly for a month after the Feb.14th surgery and he did say she has abnormal leg structure. I will have to ask him again on specifics. The vet also said I could use meloxicam (anti-inflamatory) for pain - small dose - in the evenings if necessary. I will try to use sparingly but not much choice. Re board certified vet question - I live in Canada and it is a licensed vet according to our regulatory group. I tried to choose the one with the bed rating and feedback. He has been very good in most respects it seems but it all depends all the outcome doesn't it? Re Pins put in for LP surgery------I am sure the vet only made a groove for the kneecap. She was in a cast for 2 weeks. Are pins usually standard? Unfortunately I am unable to drive currently due to elbow replacement so getting to the vet takes planning. Sorry I haven't figured out how to enclose people's comments in quotes! I hope I am not too confusing. Merle and Pixie |

| I think I'd be getting a second opinion... that sounds like an awful long time to heal.

| The orthopedic surgeon and physical therapist both said 8 weeks should be when they can return to all normal activity for Callie and they said that is with most dogs who get the surgery. I would get a second opinion by a orthopedic surgeon. The vet should have known the leg structure when he was performing the surgery and if it wasnt like that before sugery then something went wrong and needs to be looked at and taken care of. If she is in pain it needs to become a top priority.

If she's still in pain/discomfort, I'd get a second opinion asap.

| I agree with KJC. The pain you mention is what surprises and confuses me. I know it takes awhile to heal but IMO (and it's just me) Pixie shouldn't be in pain or require pain meds at this point. Would love to see a picture of her
