| First time dealing with Kennel Cough!! My DH and I added Milo to our family last weekend, the next day both him and Lola started coughing. They are both eating and drinking and playing (all day..lol) but the cough had me concerned (they have coughed once or twice per day since) so i packed them up yesterday and brought them to the Vet (milo needed some vaccinations and a checkup anyway) They Vet said he was not worried about it since they were still acting normal and it would probably clear up on its own in a few weeks. He said to just watch them and if they start not eating or acting lethargic to take them back in and he would give them some antibiotics. My question is does this sound normal? I do not want to overreact, but I am a concerned momma, any thoughts?

| First I want to say that I hope your vet did not vaccinate your pups while they are sick ? If they are coughing then do keep an eye & if any change for the worse I would take them in to be safe as if it gets worse they may need antibiotics. Kennel cough can turn into pneumonia quickly. I will be praying that your babies have a speedy recovery. |

| Usually when they have kennel cough they are put on an antibiotic not to treat the kennel cough but to keep it from developing into pneumonia

| We have 6 dogs and all but two had KC. I'm really surprised that you vet did not give your dog antibiotics. That was the first thing my vet did. It took about rwo weeks for it to clear. I would take the dog to another vet because that is very strange. |

| is it an actual cough or more like they sound like they have something stuck in their throat? sometimes it can be what's called 'pharyngeal gag reflex' or reverse sneezing. Here's my video of Momo, @ 13 secs in he does the reverse sneezing which he does once or twice a day, u'll need your speakers turned on to hear it: If your vet suspected it was kennel cough, he would have prescribed anitibiotics...they can tell if the pup is congested w/the stethoscope.

| As I recall he did mention something about their lungs sounding clear (maybe not congested?) And he did give them vaccinations; Lola got her rabies and Milo got a dewormer and distemper. Is that bad??? Oh god now I'm more worried! They are still acting fine tho...not sure what to do

| The vaccine that should NOT be given when a pup has kennel cough is the Bordetella vaccine, as it can worsen the condition.

| Buster had kennel cough when I fist brought him home and he was treated with antibiotics. He was still coughing a little a month later but my vet thought he was doing better so he was given a vaccination it was not the Bordetella vaccine or the one for rabies but another (sorry I can't remember) but within 24 hours his symptoms worsened and he ended up having to stay in the hospital for three days on IV antibiotics as he was verging on pneumonia. In the future it is best not to vaccinate them when they are sick as their resistance is low. If they continue to cough I would suggest another visit and perhaps another vet. Best wishes and I hope they are better soon.

| Thanks for your advice, I will def watch them closely, after watching the video I can tell this is not what they are doing (but I have heard Lola make that noise before, but it was a while ago) And if it does get worse/more frequent I call my Vet(we have had him for over 2 years and all three of our yorkies but none of them have ever had anything seriously wrong before) and if he still isn't willing to do anything I will seek out a new Vet. Thanks again
