I am a bit concerned about Jeter. He seems to be limping whenever he gets up after laying down for a bit. Nothing has happened to me to make me think that he had hurt it. He is only 6 months, could he just be stiff? Any advice would be appreciated.

He could have a luxated patella which is a dislocated knee cap. I'd take him to the vet just to be sure. My Maltese, Codie, had a luxated patella in his rear left leg and required immediate surgery. Better to be safe than sorry.

If he did have a luxated patella would he be able to run and jump and play after a few minutes? He doesn't seem to be in any pain. Thanks sooo much for your quick response.

In some cases, yes. My Codie was able to run and play normally until his condition got worse over a very short period of time. Codie had a grade 4 luxated patella at such a young age.

lexi used to limp at one time, for no reason i think.. i thought something was wrong with her too... i waited for about a week and if she still limped i was going to take her to the vet.. well it took around 5
days and she stopped,, she must of sprained her leg probably from jumping on and off the couch... she is fine now... just keep an eye on him and see what happens in a day or two...dont worry yet.ok?

Sounds like it is defintiely worth checking out. It's a hind leg right? Only the hind legs have kneecaps...not to state the obvjious, but i actually did not know this until a vet showed me....LOL

LOLOL I didn't know that either until a few months ago when Codie was diagnosed with LP.

I would have the vet check him out. Young pups do not limping unless something is wrong. Old dogs get stiff from arthritis like humans, but not young dogs.
I would check for luxating petella and Legg Calve Perthes. Best wishes

It is actually Jeters front leg. So this would rule out the patella problem, right?I did not know that the front legs dont have kneecaps. People are so helpful and informative on here. I am soooo very glad I found all of you.

My little Bichon came in with quite a profound limp. He actually had one of his hind legs tucked up under him and wouldn't use it at all. I elected to watch him for a few days ---and there was no improvement. So off to he vet we went. He had torn his anterior cruciate ligament and needed surgery.

At this point the vet, the vet still wanted to wait a few days before performing surgery. He wanted to get him on medications and get the swelling down further (which was happening on its own following the initial injury.)

I was surprised that he didn't want to rush right in to surgery, but understood when he explained why. Louie did have surgery a few days later and everthing went well and he has done well every since.

I still would watch my dogs a few days before I took them to the vet with a bad leg or limp............because my dogs have often limped for a day or two from who knows what, and it has resolved completely.

Well, it is not LP or LCP..maybe a strain..odd.
Funny, I never thought the front joint was a knee cap..I call them arms and arms have elbows. LOL

I hope Jeter is ok and it is nothing that would require surgery.
I keep calling the arms, legs and such also and my husband keeps correcting me.

Pat, once again you took the words out of my mouth. About LP and LCP, I mean. Both times I have had Yorkies with broken bones, they were the front leg and minor accidents caused them...

If it's his front leg that's bothering him, then it's not LP. I'd take him to the vet just to be on the safe side.
