| My boy just choked on a treat... I think?? I have these hard dog biscuits which my dogs rarely eat, but I was hoping it would help with tarter on the teeth. I took one biscuit and broke it into 3rds (3 dogs), one biscuit def. too large for a small yorkie. So I gave them each a piece and was doing a few things and we went into my room. He started sorta gagging. So of course I am trying not to panic as is my nature. He starts gagging up a bunch of this really thick stringy mucous. Seriously, it was gross and awful and thick. I've never seen anything like it. I had to pull it out or he would have choked on that. Then he did it again. i grabbed a sock and was pulling this crud out of his mouth. Then I held him for a few minutes trying to feel if his breathing was normal while logging on and pulling up how to do the heimlich if I needed to. After a few minutes he jumps up, starts barking at phantom noises like he always does. He did that several minutes, and so I believe he is ok. He is now laying in his crate, kind of pouting and acting like I did something to him. So stupid, I should have watched him better, I wasn't thinking. I believe he was starved as a pup and he mostly swallows his food whole without chewing, trying to make sure he gets it all. What was the mucous all about?? I guess no more treats, scared the life out of me!

| That has to be the most scarest thing. I am nearly paranoid about treats. Dudley is so little I hold his while he eats it. The only thing I give them is the little dental treats that we buy. I give them carrots, apples, green beans and cheerios. The thing is they can get choked on anything. My son's little pug got choked on hamburgar. He is a fireman and so he knew what to do but I would have panicked. I need to learn what to do because of it being life threatening. Scares me to even think about it. So glad your baby is okay. |

| YT has a sticky about choking...good for everyone to read it. Choking incidents are indeed very frightening. Happy to hear that Mojo is ok! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...-maneuver.html

YT 1000 Club Member | Oh my I had an emergency this week as well with Romeo choking on broccoli. It was a harrowing experience and has reminded me to not leave him alone with food.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I hold Joey's bullysticks for him and throw them away when they are about 2 inches long. If you break a biscuit up, you might encourage them to swallow it whole rather than chewing on it, and the idea of cleaning their teeth is that they are gnawing and chewing on something. Anyway, I’m glad everything turned out okay, but you might want to find a chewing stick that is made for their size, and of course, always supervise.

| Wow what a scare. I like dentasticks for removing tarter but you still need to supervise them. Jewels wont chew on them only Chachi so I have to give her bully sticks. It seems you have to be careful with whatever you give them though. Sorry that happened

| Tiny treats I worry so much about that. I only give them those little organic star shaped treats because they small. Here is a link and they are towards the bottom of the page. My pups love them. Dog Treats | Wet Noses |

| I know that is a terrible feeling. I'm so glad all is well. I don't know what the mucous was about other than that was what was in his stomach???? It is safe to give treats that crunch very easily. At least, they won't choke on them. I hope your heart rate has returned to normal by now.
