| What could these continuing symptoms be? Tootsy is still having the following symptoms: nausea, occasional vomiting, occasional diarrhoea, lethargy does not want to walk and pants if she does go for a short walk, pants sometimes during the day or night for no apparent reason. When she sleeps it sounds as though her chest has mucus on it. It does not make any sound during the day and she does not cough or sneeze. The vet listened to her lungs when she examined her, and made no comment. She has had a course of antibiotics and an anti-nausea injection. Did not help. What diseases present with these symptoms in Yorkies? Does anyone know? I am taking her back to the vet tomorrow and would like to look up any relevant diseases, so that I can ask the right questions. Could anyone help me? hugs xx |

| Isn't this the pup with mammary lumps? Has a uterine infection been ruled out? Was she spayed yet? What are the blood, fecal, urinalysis, and xrays (chest and abdomen) showing? I would hope if it sounds like there is mucus in her chest the vet did an xray. Lots of things can present with those symptoms pertaining to the GI tract. What has been ruled out and how? Eating, drinking, pooping, and peeing okay?

| Thanks for the reply. Yes she is the Yorkie with the lump which is now shrinking! She is due to be spayed this month but I phoned today to cancel as I want her well for a whole week before she undergoes surgery. She had her urine tests done and they were fine. The antibiotics were for a possible uterine infection and to cover any bowel infection. No fecal or blood tests or xrays yet. She will, no doubt, be having these tomorrow or next day buy she will definitely have them done. I have been searching the web to try and work out what the problem could possibly be. It is driving me nuts with worry. I thought I would ask here which diseases, that are fairly common to Yorkies, have these symptoms, so I could do some research. |

| Forgot to add that she is not eating normally as she has such a lot of nausea and she gets diarrhoea, every other day or so, when she does eat. She is drinking, sometimes a bit more than usual but not much. Today she has had virtually nothing - no food or water. Just not interested. She has had two runny poops this morning. |

| There are many diseases that can cause these symptoms all the way from something as benign as a little virus to autoimmune disease to cancer. IBD is common in Yorkies, but that can't be diagnosed until other things are ruled out and would not include mucus filled lungs. It sounds like these symptoms have been going on for weeks. This girl needs to see a vet for testing today.

When a Vet has no comment, are you pressing him to discuss the symptoms and possible tests she needs? I understand it can be intimidating sometimes for owners to do this but, you are your pets ONLY & BEST advocate for their healthcare...speak up! If you do not like the answers you get...then get a second opinion. These dogs can go down fast and the longer you waste time on the internet searching for answers...you are putting your girl at risk!

| Thank you for all these replies. I did not realise that it could be so many things. She will be seeing the vet in the morning and I will see that she has all the tests and xrays. She did see the vet on Friday afternoon and she said that Tootsy did not look like an ill dog despite these symptoms and had not lost weight. So she said she wanted to err on the side of caution before doing any more tests, which would upset Tootsy, but to let her know if it goes on in which case she would have to do all the tests and xrays It has gone on and I booked her in for tomorrow morning. I was going to look up possible illnesses tonight but it seems that there are too many of them so I will have to wait. I will let you know what the vet says tomorrow. Once I get the test results back from the lab, I will let you all know the results. Thanks a million. I am just so worried about her and am frequently in tears. I have changed vets a lot over the years and this one was recommended by a vet who told me that this was the vet that she would want to treat her dog. I feel I must give her just a bit more time, providing she agrees to urgent tests and xrays, but she said she was going to do that, anyway. Thanks again. Please pray that it is something simple that can be easily treated. I would appreciate it so much. hugs xx |

| How long ago did the vomiting and not wanting to eat start? Can she hold down food and water? Is she pooping liquid or is it formed? Even a day of not wanting to eat may necessitate testing (when they are vomiting and sick, not when a Yorkie is just being picky). Are you sure she isn't dehydrated? Honestly in the US if they start vomiting and go off food, it is considered an emergency very quickly. Hours of vomiting or a day off of eating and tests start to get ran. If not and there is an obstruction, the intestines can start to die off. If it's pancreatitis and the dog keeps eating, the pancreas will continue to eat itself. If it's IBD, the inflammation continues without treatment. If it's pyometra, death can occur quickly. IF it's a bacteria and the antibios don't clear it quickly, sometimes supportive care (IV in the hospital) is needed, etc., etc., etc. I'm not sure what the vet meant by wanting to wait and err on the side of caution. That is erring on the side of danger. Her stress level over having tests done doesn't matter at this point. It didn't matter a day after this started. What matters is that she gets diagnosed and treated before she dehydrates and crashes on you. My dogs routinely gets bloods done. They also sometimes have to have xrays. And they do fine with it... If there are ANY signs of dehydration I would get this dog to the ER now. That's probably where she should be anyway. Perhaps she should be on an IV while a diagnosis is being made. Vomiting all the time and not wanting to eat every other day is very, very serious.
