| How to Tell if Baby is Sick? Please advise me on how to tell if my 6 mos. male Yorkie pup is ill. Tonight Liberty seems more lethargic, and moving more slowly. He will eat a puppy treat if I give it to him - he ate 3 and 1/2 with no problem, so don't think it is probably hypoglycemia. However, he seems weak. Liberty will stand if I place him upright and he will come to me - but like he's real tired. At this hour, he usually is ready for a last run around the house before night-time, and he had a long nap today because I've been ill (had surgry a few days ago). He is usually full of that puppy energy. He's been cared for at home by family so there has been no new, outside exposure. He's also up-to-date on his shots, etc. The only presenting issue seems to be a very tired-like behavior. Any suggestions on what I should do? Should I stay up tonight and make certain he is responsive every 5 or 10 minutes? Or would this be useless? Would this only make him more ill if he is fighting off a bug? Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks. |

Owned by Bella & Tibbs Donating Member | Idk maybe he is picking up on your emotion where you have been sick.... Tibbs my 20 week old does that if I'm sad or sick he is sad acting and sick acting with me. I believe dogs do pick up on your emotions and how you are feeling! I wish you guys the best of luck I hope your little one is not getting sick.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Could family have fed him something that's a no no? Sometimes dogs with upset tummies can be tempted to eat something else. I wouldn't try tempting him with treats anymore, otherwise he won't want his food, and Yorkies can't handle many treats. When was the last time he pooped? If it's been within 24 hours, he's probably doesn't have to see a vet tonight. I always recommend that people have a good phone relationship with their vet and his staff. You can call and tell them the symptoms and they will tell you what to look for and if it warrants a visit. When did he get his rabies shot, sometimes they are sick a few days after that. Maybe he's just depressed because you were gone? I hope you're both feeling better soon. He hasn't hit his head or anything like that has he?

| Answers to Questions Thanks for responding. He had a regular bowel movement at dinner time - a normal time for him. Family fed him same food as always. Liberty has not fallen nor hit his head. He ate normally today. His last immunizations were 3 weeks ago - no reaction at all from them. No one saw him into anything unusual - but who can ever tell 100%???? It is true that I have been very tired, in pain with my incisions and all, maybe Liberty is feeling empathy for me? No other symptoms are presenting. Maybe I should just watch him for a couple of hours to make sure he remains the same or better? Thanks for the quick advise!!! |

| Another question -- do Yorkies sometimes act like they're just fighting off a bug, like people do? Weird question, but I don't really know if that happens. Do they mask illness like birds do or do they pretty much show their symptoms when fighting off a bug? |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Yes, dogs will hide pain, they don't want anyone to know they're vulerable, as an attack is more likely to take place. Not eating is the primary sign that something's wrong and the dog could be in pain. I hope Liberty is feeling better today, and it's very possible he just knows that you're not 100%. As long as he's eating and pooping normally, I wouldn't worry.

| I know you mentioned you don't think its hypoglycemia but I would still give him either karo syrup, honey, or maple syrup. It can't hurt him. I had to give my pups either of the 3 several times a day. Also, I used to get worried when the pups would sleep a lot forgetting that they were pups and they sleep majority of the day. Has he had any sudden amount of energy even if its just for a few minutes?
