| Kinder Has Campylobacter Again Help Has anyone gone through campylobacter infection with their yorkie? Kinder had this last May and our vet had me stop the bully sticks because of some dogs having this kind of problem. We do not give table scraps maybe a pinch of shredded cheese once in a while. She gets a kong with a tiny bit of peanut butter. I feed her Fromms Whitefish and potatoe. She cannot have anything with chicken because she gets very sick from it. The only thing I did different a few days ago was give her four pieces a day of Flint River Trout & Potatoe dogfood. Thought I would try it because it is chicken free ;I even talked to the company. They said it was a safe food for her. Tuesday nite she was chewing her nylabone and 5am Wednesday she was throwing up. I panicked brought her in right away and Dr. Dave x-rayed her to see if she had an obstuction; she just had irritated swollen intestines. We put her on metronidazole and a day later she was fine. This morning she pooped and had a sqeaky tummy then a poop with mucous. Brought that in and now she has camylobacter infection and has to take amoxicillin now. She seems fine now and eating good and the vet gave her Forti Flora too and told me not to give her any samples of Flint River. I am so clean I wash her dishes everyday, clean bedding we treat her like a human. It really hurts me to see her get this does anyone know any good suggestions. I don't let her sniff noses with other dogs maybe I am nuts being too protective. |

| Am so sorry to hear that your baby is going through this. Is this something where a dog has a genetic predisposition for susceptibility to this infection or do you know? Do you live near a source for this - if you know? I'll bet you are really scared.

| We do not know but this is a good question to ask my vet. He did say dogs carry this in their intestines and when they get stressed the campylobacter takes over. She seems fine now but has to go through the medicines. Also undercooked chicken, poultry, or how some food is prepared can give them this. He said it is very common with dogs especially little ones. I am glad I took her poop in right away and got on top of it. I feel better now that she is playing with her toys and she is such an angel taking her meds. If you come up with any good ideas let me know. Susan |

| Thanks to the both of you and I hope all goes well. She is full of energy tonite but I have to do the medications for a few days. I worry so much after what we went through with our dear Keally. I just feel my husband and I don't deserve this. Maybe God knows we are good parents so he made sure we got her to love and always take care of her. Glad we have pet insurance and we want only the best for our baby. I think of all the furbabies and even other animals that have owners that are worthless and do not take care of their pets. |

| Could have gotten it from the bullies and it is still hanging around. Slightest intestinal irritation from new food or stress may be causing the flare. Bullies aren't a good chew for pups. How are things today?

| It could very well be the food. Unfortunately as I believe this still to be true the labeling on dog food does not have to fully disclose what is actually in it. If you had this kind of thing happen I would be reluctant to ever try that food again. Often what happens is that something can sensitize the intestine so that it changes the flora and normal levels of bacteria can bloom to abnormal levels causing the symptoms you see. Stress can do it, foods or ingredients they are sensitive to can do it. Coccidia works that way causing coccidiosis and really any bad bacteria does. Bad bacteria is carried in the gut but you don't have the condition showing up until something changes then you get blooms or overproduction of the bad bacteria then symptoms appear. |

| You are right about the bullies my vet said this past May to stop them. I did but she got the camylobacter again. She is doing great and full of pep. Her tummy is good and no more diarrea with mucous. She will be on meds for another week. I am glad I got her checked right away but I am a worry wart over her anyways. Just want her to have the best life and healthcare and a good mom and dad. Thanks for the imformation and asking how she is doing. |
