| Adopting a Sick Puppy (Parvo) I have been patiently waiting for the arrival of my precious puppy for over a month as he got older. His name will likely be Kiwi I think. (he is now 9 weeks) Unfortunately I just found out today from the adoption coordinator that him and his litter mates have Parvo . She said its likely from the mother since they were born in a rescue home without any other dogs. The mother was rescued from a backyard breeder. The vet explained that it is likely that since they were recently weened off their mother that they lost her immunity and since she may have exposed them to it they contracted it. My particular puppy happens to be suffering the least from the symptoms and his poop is still solid. She said he's still very playful and he will likely pull through this. I am so sad that he and his mother and litter mates have to go through this. Hopefully after the first 48hrs they will be ok and get past this. Has anyone experience a pup with parvo and have any tips on life after? I know they said if he gets through it i could treat him like any other normal pup. Let me know! Also if you have any recommendation on names. Kiwi might be a little feminine for a boy dog with what I've been told is a very bold and playful personality. |

| I think Kiwi is a cute name! It's very androgynous and could be used for a either a boy or girl. I don't know anything about parvo, sorry. But I do like the name! |

| Welcome, I see that we joined about the same time. I am so sorry that your baby and his litter mates are sick. I haven't ever had a dog contract Parvo but I understand that it can be touch and go for a little while. There is a thread "boy names A to Z" you might look at. I actually picked my babys name from a people baby name site. I kept a page with all of the names and their meanings and went back every 3 or 4 days to look at it and delete any names that I decided that I didn't care for. It was fun to do and kept me busy while waiting for new baby. Her name is Mina and it means "strong willed warrior". It is a very fitting name for her. Hope to hear that everyone is well soon! |

| We had a puppy get parvo. He stayed at the vet 11 days, on IV fluids and it cost us 6500.00. Parvo is hard to treat, especially in small dogs, and there is no cure for the virus itself. The treatment is for the secondary infections the virus causes, and the dehydration. Because their body is trying to shed the virus (which lives in the intestines) they poop and vomit, and causes further hydration. It can take very little time for a healthy, playful pup to succumb to the symptoms and become lethargic and very sick. A large percentage of pups that get it do not survive. Good luck. The good thing is, it's like chicken pox, and once your pup has it, it's very unlikely for them to get it again (although it is still possible) You can message me if you'd like. Keep in mind parvo can live in the soil of a home, it can be brought in on the hands, clothes and even shoes of a person who has come in contact with it, and it can even live in the carpet and on the furr of other animals. The only thing that kills it is bleach, and short of burning your house down or digging up the yard 3 ft and hauling out the o,d dirt, you can not get it out of the yard. Even then, you can not make every other person vaccinate their dogs, or keep their dogs from coming in contact with it and bringing it into your yard and home. It's a hardy virus that can live for years.... P.s. Not sure if you can give any input to the vet or whoever you're getting the pup from, but A good probiotic is helpful anytime your dog (or you) take antibiotic, as antibiotics take out ALL the bacteria in your body and your body actually needs good bacteria to help it fight infections.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | I'm so sorry that your little one is going through this. Parvo is tough on any dog and even more so on the small puppies. I had a rescued dog who had parvo many, many years ago. Her recovery was rough (and expensive) but once she recovered she went on to live with us another 12 years. Good luck. I hope your little one makes a quick and full recovery.

| Great news last night. Out of the 4 puppies, 3 of them ( including mine) are doing fantastic and playing and barking! One of the puppies unfortunately is not doing very well. I think it is one of the boys. I am praying that he pulls through as well even though I am only actually taking home one. It would just be so sad for them to have gotten this far and have something so devastating happen to their brother! I will update later today when I speak with the adoption coordinator again! |

| Unfortunately it looks like Kiwi is not doing great today at all. It looks like he's starting to experience the symptoms of Parvo today. Lying around, not playing and just not feeling so hot. I am crossing my fingers that he will pull through this! It is just so sad that he is having to go through this. I think he is just experiencing the symptoms a little late I think. I hope he gets better tomorrow. My poor sick puppy. Its a shame that only 12 hours ago I could say he was playing and since then he has not been doing so hot :-/ Last edited by nychelse; 07-26-2011 at 04:01 PM. Reason: addition |

Owned by Bella & Tibbs Donating Member | My friend Ashley adopted a border collie and 4 days after bringing it home she (ZELDA) got parvo. She was very sick She spent 11 days in the vet on IV fluids and under vet care. She has completely recovered now! You could never tell she has had such a near death experience! She is 2 years old now and you can not ask for a happier job. When she was sick the vet said that the major focus is keeping them from getting dehydrated until they get over the sickness.

Thank you for the kind and inspiring words. I am very hopeful that he will pull through. He is being well taken care of by a full-time foster mom who was trained by the Vet to administer his IVs and the Vet has been calling to check back in on them a few times a day. They are all in caring and loving hands. I am so glad your friend's collie got through the Parvo. I have seen 11 days being the norm for Parvo puppies. Is this because they are there until a few days after they've been feeling better? | |

Owned by Bella & Tibbs Donating Member | Zelda was there until she was not only feeling better but having normal stool or poop...her poop had turned bloody when Ash took her. Not positive but I also think she had to stay until she tested negative for the virus.

| I wish your little Kiwi and litter mates are feeling better. I've never had an experience with Parvo but I do love the name. |
