| Does anyone recognize this skin problem? (pictures included) Buster is 4 years and 7 months old. He has never had any prior skin issues. He has had a skin irritation issue for the past several months. We use Hartz Ultra Guard flea and tick protection on him. He gets bathed around twice a month with Oster Oatmeal Naturals shampoo. He eats Purina food regularly and once in a while we give him a table treat (always something healthy, no junk). Does anyone recognize this skin irritation? It seems to be a bit "puffy" and the hair is missing. It also has some white flakey crust. It is only on one side of his snout and nowhere else on his body. The skin seems to be dry. Here are a few photos. If anyone could shed some light on this issue I would really appreciate it. * Just realized something that may be relevant. Lately (the past few months) he has been rubbing his snout on the corners of the door openings/walls in my apartment, and now that I think about it he it probably itches him and he is "scratching" it, so to say. His skin has also been very sensitive to touch lately, especially on his back. When I scratch him or comb him he/his skin tenses up immensely, every time, regardless if I am applying enough pressure or not. Any ideas? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...r/DSCN1225.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...r/DSCN1221.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...r/DSCN1219.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...r/DSCN1217.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...r/DSCN1213.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...r/DSCN1212.jpg |

| For sure you need a vet's opinion. It could be fungal from the moisture from eye discharge. |

| It looks inflamed and uncomfortable. You really need to take in to be seen by your vet.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Ouch that looks painful. I would get him to your vet as soon as possible. My cali has allergies and she scratched out hair on her face and it bothered her to have her back touched. I got her on the right medicine after testing and food changes and she has been great since. I have heard that Hartz is not a good product to use so you may want to try something your vet recommends. I hope Buster's skin clears up soon. He is a cutie.

| I know if this was my baby, I would have them to the Vet already. You just mess with things around the eye area. So I would suggest takig him to the Vet. As for the using Hartz Flea Protection and the food, I will say it's not the best at all.

| I agree with the above posters...your pup needs to go to a vet. I also do not recommend Hartz for flea and tick prevention. What about heartworms? Are you giving any heartworm preventatives? If not, you really need to get him to a vet, get him tested and start him on preventatives. Your vet can also advise you on flea and tick prevention.

| Poor baby! I agree with everyone above that your little guy needs to see a vet as soon as possible to get some relief, and before permanent damage is done. His eye is watering badly too. Sending positive thoughts to Buster. Keep us updated.

| This kind of thing needs to be checked out as soon as it comes up. He will need an exam and possible skin scraping, culture, biopsy, dermatologist visit, etc. Hartz has killed many dogs and cats and should not be used.

| I am just seeing this. Were you able to get him to a vet? What did you find out? |

| Yikes.. poor baby.. I would take him to the vet for sure, but if you say he seems to be having skin irritation all over his body I would immediately switch foods to a limited ingredient formula. Sometimes allergies can cause inflammation like that, the vet will probably treat him with antibiotics and maybe even steroids as that looks infected too, changing the food may help prevent it from happening again. I don't have any personal experience with hartz as we've always used the stuff from the vets, but I've also heard stories about the harsh chemicals in the formulas, which if you have a dog with sensitive skin could exasperate the condition I'm sure. Good luck and I hope your vet is able to get him cleared up fast! |
