Anal glands? Hi - my yorkie, Rocky, was having problems Tuesday so I took him to the vet Wednesday and he had his anal glands emptied, which were very full from what I am told. Ever since that time he continues to twist his rear end to the side and appears to attempt to bite his rear end. Sometimes he cries. I have an appointment to take him back to the vet tomorrow as this doesn't seem right to me. He has been doing this since I brought him home and it hasn't improved much. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks. Erika Last edited by erika1948; 07-01-2011 at 04:27 PM.

| Sometimes adding more fiber to the diet (like green beans) can help them to empty on their own. He may still be uncomfortable from having them expressed, or they may have refilled again. Might take a week or two to get him functioning normally again.

Thanks! I am taking him back now to have them take a look and see if he possibly needs more done. He is not too much for green beans but I will give it a shot. Will also try pumpkin if I can find it and sweet potatoes. Will post what I find out. Thanks, again! Erika

Hi, the vet told me that Rocky's anal glands are definitely empty. He gave me Animax ointment to apply to his rear end 2x a day for 5 days. He said not to give him anything like pumpkin or sweet potatoes or anything that might start loose stools and irritate him further at this point. Erika

anal glands To avoid the problem I express the anal gland every time I bath. It is easy to do and will most likely save some vet bills in the long run. I learned the expensive way. Have had two over the years with infected anal glands and had vet bills. It wasn't until a Yorkie friend told me to express the anal glands at bath time did I learn. The vets never told me I could do that myself. Good luck!

Our vet told us expressly not to do that, because once you do it you have to do it forever because the glands get damaged. I'm hoping with a good diet we won't have any problems

Anal glands Rocky is 14-1/2 and in all this time this is probably only the second or third time in his lifetime that he's had this done that I know of and the first time it was this bad.
