| Help Support and Advice Needed My Yorkie - Jodie aged 14 became very ill early Thursday morning and had to be rushed to the emergency vets where she was put on a drip and given injected antibiotics. She was vomiting and almost in a state of collapse and was found to have a very high temperature. She was diagnosed about 3 months ago after routine bloods were done ago with liver problems. She has never displayed any of the classic symptoms of liver disease - she is a very lively dog who runs about, plays with her toys - would eat till she bust, goes for long walks without tiring etc. Initially it was thought that she may have Cushing's disease as she has some of the classic symptoms - ie. raised liver values, loss of hair, voracious apetite but the test was inconclusive. She spend 2 days in the veterinary hospital after receiving treatment and is back to her old self - playing and eating. However the vets told me that she has liver failure and will relapse within a short period of time - maybe days or at the most weeks as the liver function tests were considerably worse than a few months ago. Obviously I'm in a state of shock and to a certain extent disbelief although I'm not doubting the results of the blood tests. What I find hard to believe is that she can be apparently so fit and lively yet be so seriously ill. I am wondering if the raised liver enzymes could be due to an acute bacterial infection in the liver as her temperature was very high - I know that I really ought to ask the vet this question but my mind is frantically searching for answers. Obviously due her age I am not going to put her through any more treatments when a relapse does occur and will have her euthanised. Could someone just give me a little advice and support at this very sad time - I can hardly see the computer screen as the tears are rollling down my face. Many Thanks in anticipation of your replies DLB07 |

| I am so sorry that your little Jodie is ill. It sounds like you are a wonderful mom to her and she has had a great life. I am not a health expert, so hoping someone with more knowledge will answer your questions about liver problems. You have come to the right place for support... also wanted to say welcome to our group.

| I'm so sorry to hear your little one is having liver problems. I am a human med person, not a vet med person, but liver failure can be caused by infection (as well as other things). Has the vet identified a cause? We had a little one suffer from pancreatitis, along w a plethora of other health problems, and it is amazing how they compensate. We will keep your little one and mommy in our prayers. |

| Thanks for your reply - there is something niggling away at me regarding this diagnosis - one that she doesn't appear unwell on herself neither before nor after the events of Thursday - she's made what looks to be a complete recovery and - two that we don't really have a diagnosis as to what is causing the liver failure as only blood tests have been carried out - I did ask the vet what was wrong with her liver and got very unspecific answers such as it's probably age. I think that I will have to get a second opinion about this. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am sorry to hear about Jodie. My pom had Cushings and the medicines caused her to go in to liver failure. They stopped her cushing's medicine and put her on liver medicine and her liver disease improved dramatically. Sadly she passed a year later from complications of the cushings. Hopefully, Jodie will continue to do well. Did they put her on any liver medicine? It really helped my pom.

| A second opinion is a good idea... I had a 6 yr old who had kidney failure...went home to die. 3 yrs later she is very well, no signs of kidney disease...the vet was not wrong, but whatever was casuing the kidneys to fail at that time corrected. Best wishes... |

| Wow, that is something! Did the vet ever identify the cause of the kidney failure or just your treating her at home turned that around? That is something! (Glad to hear that story! - we're going to have to PM you w kidney problem posts! great job!) |

| The only medication that Jodie is on is Hepatosyl (adenosyl in US). She was given 3 antibiotic injections over 2 days when admitted to hospital - I'm worried that she should have been given a course to take home with her to quell any infection that she may have had - her temperature was sky high but had normalised within 24 hours. I've got an appointment with another vet for a second opinion first thing Monday morning so that I can discuss the issues that are bothering me. |

| Oh, I am so sorry you are having to go through this with your little baby. It is the only down side of having a dog and it is so heartbreaking when they are old and very ill and can no longer enjoy a real dog's life. Just be there for your baby and know that most if not all of us on this site have been there more than once usually and know the misery and pain you are going through. I hope there is some way to get her back to good health for her age. As a dog lover, you will make the best decision for your little baby and rest in the love you two have and always will share.

| Many thanks for all your kind words. I would be more than interested in trying any diet or treatment that may help Jodie. The most difficult part of this is the fact that except for the events of last Thursday she appears so well and has the energy of a two year old and would eat until she bust (if I let her) so its hard to believe that she is so ill - I can't wait for the second opinion and the chance to discuss my doubts and concerns tomorrow. Will keep you posted whatever the outcome - I'm keeping and open mind at the moment. |
