Senior Yorkie Talker | Phantom Pregnancy.....HELP! hello all, my 1 year and 4 month old yorkie bitch Millie, had her second season about 7-8 weeks ago and had a phantom pregnancy straight after it, we have arranged to have her spayed on the 27th of this month as the vet told us we have to wait atleast 6 weeks after a phantom pregnancy, but with about 3 weeks to go, shes having another one!! shes claimed three "puppies" (two rubber chicken toys and a andrex puppy pyjama case thats three times bigger than her!!) she sits either in my other dogs crate or nests in a throw on the sofa with them, moving them every so often, snapping at our other dogs when they go near them, trying to get them to feed, washing them and carrying them around whilst squeaking constantly at us which is driving us crazy! im the only person who she leave her "pups" with and she brings them to me to watch whilst she eats her dinner ect... i hate seeing her like this as you can imagine but i just dont know what to do to help her! i will be going up the vets tomorrow after work to ask about delaying the spaying or if it would be best to breed her (even though she is on the tiny petite side) as i know she would make a fantastic attentive mother. i dont want to make the decison to get her spayed when she wants pups but i dont really want to put her through the strain of pregnancy and birth. i really need some help and advice on this guys, i really wanna do the best for my little girl, shes my princess

| Wow. My Foxy is going through her own dilemmas with this right now. She is a "rescue" and she was in heat when I got her, and now all of a sudden she is showing signs of being pregnant. Her previous owner seems to think its a false pregnancy, but regardless I have decieded to have her spayed Wednesday and if there are puppies we will abort them for the simple fact that Foxy has some health issues and shes 5 and I dont want to potentially lose her when she starts to deliver the puppies. I do wish you all the best with your situation..

Senior Yorkie Talker | aww bless her, i do hope shes okay! im not sure what my lil dog thinks is going on! really stuck with this, my other bitch (collie springer spaniel cross) was spayed when we got her and has never had any problems of this kind. obviously i want to do the best for Millie, its heartbreaking for us to watch. shes only left the sofa twice today to have a drink and refuses to leave her "puppies" even to go out to the loo. these lil dogs have alot to answer for!!

| I don't know much about what happens with a phantom pregnancy, but for what reason does the vet want to wait 6 weeks? - is it for medical reasons for psychological? Honestly, if it was my dog, I'd see if the vet would just spay her now, unless of course there's a medical reason not too, but I've assisted in spays of dogs that actually were very early into an unwanted pregnancy (or in heat) and yes, the surgery is a bit more involved, but nothing a good vet can't handle and not usually a big deal at all. If she's spayed, she won't have these "issues" any more. Her instinct to want to reproduce and raise puppies will go away and she can just be a happy dog without all this stress. Don't breed her just because you think she wants puppies, it's instinct with dogs, be carefull you don't "humanize" her feelings and behavior causing you to get in WAY over your head with an actually pregnant Yorkie and her puppies. Good luck with her, poor little thing, she's confused. Talk to your vet about pushing the spay up sooner, not postponing it, that's what I'd do.

Senior Yorkie Talker | i cant help but humanize her feeling as shes my lil baby! i know i should though. i really do want to do the best for her and will see the vet tomorrow after work. the vet likes to wait 6 weeks after to spay as the ovaries help sort out the hormone inbalance to snap the bitch out of the phantom pregnancy or something like that. thanks for the help, i am seriously worried about her though, ive never seen her this bad

Well, I guess what the vet said makes sense lol, I'd see if maybe she doesn't snap out of it in a few days if he'll consider just getting it over with. The other thing you can do - re-post your question in the "breeding" section here - hopefully some breeders will be able to give you more advise.

| I don't understand why the Vet can't spay her now...When My Bailey went into her first heat, she had a false pregnancy. There was no way she was pregnant I knew that for sure but she was showing all the signs of being pregnant so I took her in to the Vet...and my Vet spayed her the next day to stop the false pregnancy from going any further. I would go and get another opinion from another Vet.

| Many years ago I had a 2 1/2lb female poodle. She went through this only once. We simply waited for her to go ourside and over a period of several days took a pretend baby one at a time. I made a point of spending more time with her especially after the last pretend baby was gone. I changed her bedding and anything that she had been using for a nest went a way for a very long time. I dont know if this was the recommended thing to do,but it worked and her pretend babies never returned. I wish you the best of luck. |

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | I really dont have much advise other than just let it runs its course and than go through with the spay.

Senior Yorkie Talker | yeah, i saw he vet today who knows Millie very well and she said that if shes not producing milk than we can go ahead with the spay in 2 weeks time when i originally booked it, she also said that if she does start producing milk, depending on how much and how she is in herself, they can still go ahead with it but they would give her drugs to stop milk production. she seems to be getting more and more protective of her "babies" by the day. she snapped at my other dog Willow earlier when she sniffed them.. is it a good idea to take her "babies" off her one by one or at all?? or just let her get on with being a mum to them until it passes? she just stays in her igloo bed all day and wont leave it

Senior Yorkie Talker | yeah could do! weve taken two of her babies off her (the rubber chickens) and she seems better but shes constantly cwtching up to her andrex puppy pyjama case so i think we will work on taking that off her later tonight or tomorrow morning. she seems to be getting better but not by much. she still wont eat unless her bowl is brought to her "babies" or go out for a wee roll on the spay.....!
