| Liver Disease...Anyone have info.. Hi everyone... My bella is 13 and has liver disease. She eats Hills LD. I give her an egg a day and carrots and rolled oats. She get 4 to 5 small meals daily. She is currently on Same E, Denosyl and Milk Thistle. She shakes at times, she needs to be shown where her food is, I give her water in a dropper, she walks in circles while on the lease, she will go in other rooms when being called (really does not know where you are).....I have to take care of my baby... So please... Does anyone else have a dog with this disease and if so could you please tell me what you feed them and give them for medicine... Any info would be appreciated. Thanks so much D |

| You can use the search bar to locate many threads in this section on liver problems, etc. I can't help you, but if she is going in other rooms when being called by you, it sounds more like a geriatric problem - not a liver-related problem. Is she visiting the vet to be checked and have her blood checked?

| Hi and Welcome to YT! Sorry to hear about your pup... Egg yolks are not recommended for dogs with liver problems .... egg whites are okay. Lactulose helps to rid the body of toxins, ask your vet for a prescription and if it would be appropriate for your dog. Also, this site may be useful: DogLiverDisease : Dog Liver Disease

Also, I believe you've been seeing the vet, as L/D is a prescription diet. I would get her on the Lactulose and Marin along with the Denosyl and Sam-E that she already takes, and then access her mental abilities at that point. Lactulose works quickly so you'll know in a few days if toxins in her blood is causing her problems. If you don't see a change in her behavior, I would keep her on all the supplements, but then see the vet again about problems that affect older dogs, as there are meds to help with those conditions (such as CCD: Canine Cognitive Disorder) also. Proteins from dairy and plant sources are easier on the liver, like cottage cheese. If you are considering home-cooking for her, Olga on the DLD (link above) can make dietary recommendations, or you could see a vet nutritionist.

| I do give her justs the whites of the eggs. The milk thistle has no alchol.. She is so hard to get to swallow pills. This morning alone it took me 4 tries to get her to take her medicine.. I will ask my vet why she is not on lactouse... So then it is safe to give her all those medicines mentioned... Thanks everyone...hugs from NJ |

| Is this is new diagnosis or has she been sick for awhile? Lactulose could be tried. Yes, it is safe to give milk thistle, lactulose, and SAMe together (Denosyl is SAMe). As long as your vet is giving you the okay, then I would have absolutely no concerns about using these there supplements together. It's done all the time. Did the vet say to add the egg and oats in? The circling could very well be caused by a liver issue, but as pups age, there is a possibility that those symptoms relating to her not recognizing things could be a type of senility. Lactulose should help if it's just toxins building up from a liver issue. Some also give omega 3 with vitamin e. It can help the liver a bit potentially.

| You should really join the yahoo liver shunt group. They are wonderful and have lots of answers. My Teddi had a liver shunt and we joined that group and got so much information. We actually went to Tennessee to have surgery and she is now almost 5 years old and has the surgery at 1 year and is perfectly healthy!!
