| Our little Max :( My name is Matt, and my wife and 2 boys (6 and 11) have 3 yorkies and a yorkie poo that we love very much. Our first and most beloved, Max (my wife says he's her real soul mate), has been having some problems, but must of the time seemed alright. I don't know what to do, and we don't have much, but I'd do anything to have our little Maxie live out his life happy, if not perfectly healthy. His symptoms match many things, but our vet seems almost sure that its renal failure -He often times seems listless, lazy, or depressed. This does not apply when one of us comes home or we have company. This also does not apply at dinner time. Or when he's trying to get over the doggy gate to us. -He drinks excessively, in amounts that sometimes seem equal to 7-8oz in one sitting. -He pees too often. For a long time now, he's sometimes peed while eating, or while running to the other dog's food bowls after eating. -3 times lately, he's peed in his sleep, one time which he didn't even get up and move on his own. -He usually doesn't have a problem getting on our bed (2 1/2 ft high), especially when there is a snack of ours up there. But at night if he jumps down to pee on the pad, he doesn't jump back up, he just puts his paws up on the edge of the bed and whines. -He has lost some weight, down to 6.6lbs from 7.2-7.4lbs. He's only 2 and a half, and he's the sweetest nicest dog you'd ever see. I really don't know if we can call our house a home without our Max. I know whatever's wrong, he'll do everything he can to stay here with us. What can we do to help him? |

| Hi Matt, welcome to Yorkie Talk Ok, I'm not a vet by any means, but here's what i'd suggest to start with: The first and easiest, cheapest thing to do is take a stool sample into your vet and have them check for parasites. Next thing, bloodwork - a full comp./CBC (those two things along with an exam should cost somewhere around $100) It does kind of sound like a kidney problem, but he's so young. Is there any way possible he could have gotten into something toxic? How long has this been going on? The other thing that would cause excess drinking and possibly a few of his other sympoms is diabetes, but again, he's really young. Idk what to tell you other than he absolutely 100% needs to see a vet asap. Talk to your vet before hand about budget, have them start with the most conservative things (like the stool check and bloodwork). Was he vaccinated as a puppy? There's just a bunch of things that need to be figured out by a vet, there's no way around it. If you need help with the vet bill, look into CareCredit (the vet you see must accept credit cards to use this though). Good luck, do what you have to to get him to a vet for at least the basic testing (if it is kidneys, they'll know by simple bloodwork).

| Welcome to YT, Matt. Your vet can do a blood test to see if it is renal failure and then proceed with diet changes. My dog was diagnosed in March and the vet changed his dog food to k/d. Thank goodness he likes it. Your vet can explain about what foods to avoid etc. Sammy also takes a vitamin and Pepcid. Good luck with your Max. Sending good thoughts and prayers your way. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am sorry to hear Max is having problems. Renal failure is easily diagnosed with blood work. I would start there if your vet hasn't already done that. There is a lot they can do to help them live a pretty normal life. A special diet, fluids etc. I have a very old dog that is in renal failure and he sleeps all the time, drinks a lot and pees a lot but your baby is so young. It could be many other things so I would start with blood work and possibly an ultrasound to check for stones. Please keep us posted.
