| patella surgery recovery Tek had his patella surgery on Friday...he had the femoral groove deepened, repositioning of the tibial crest, pin inserted to hold joint stable during healing (it comes out in 8 wks) and some ligament work. He has Legg Perthes in that hip that was not caught until about 3 wks ago and he is 3 so they did all they could to help with the patella problem. Now the problem...he is feeling way to good already :/ He is wanting to jump and go up the steps outside...I am having to watch him like a hawk...any suggestions? The vet said "those lil devils can't be trusted and u need to keep a hand on him at all times if not crated" and now i know why she said that He is also licking the wound a lot..do i need to get the lamp shade thing? Any input is appreciated. |

| My Buddy is 1 and just had patella surgery 10 days ago. They removed his stitches today. We were told under no circumstances should he be walking unless he's "taking care of business." He is literally in his kennel 24/7 unless he's eating, drinking water, or we are holding him. The vet told us to give him therapy twice a day just to be sure that he is moving his leg. He only has 3 legs so we have to be extra careful with him, if we mess this up he will be in a wheel chair. He wants to run around and play, but under doctor's orders he is to be confined to a kennel for another 3 weeks. He's not to happy about this (and he hates his cone too) but in the end he will be thankful. I would for sure get him a cone for his head and restrict his activity. |

| When Hot Rod has is lp surgery we were told complete rest for 6 weeks. The largest area he was allowed in was a 3 x 3 area. We reconfigured his xpen but he started to stand on his hinds so that didn't work. I put his crate on the table next to me on the sofa and he was so pathetic, he would stick his nose thru the crate. I finally put his harness on him and used a neck lanyard and wrapped it around my wrist just in case he would try to get up-he didn't. He was just so glad to be out of the crate. We were told to carry him to potty and only allow him to walk around til he pottied and then pick him back up to bring him in. It was a very, very long 6 weeks. He was crated whenever I left. Poor Maggie May was so lost not being able to be with her brother, she just layed with him. Due to Hot Rod's surgery, I designed a soft cone collar. You can click on the link in my signature to see about the Kiss-e Cone Collar. I can get one out to you asap. Best of luck to you and your baby for a quick recovery.

| Lulu had strict crate rest for 6 weeks after her patella surgery. It was difficult, but I knew it was best. She is doing wonderfully now.

| Buster was strict crate rest for the first 4 weeks and then he was in a xpen for the next 4. He was definitely ready to rumble way before he was allowed to. I was told by my Orthopedic Surgeon to definitely keep a cone on him until they remove the stitches. Dogs mouths have a lot of germs and you do not want them to infect the surgical site or chew on the stitches. Buster got a great soft Kiss-e-cone collar with flames from Hot Rod's mom. Not only was his surgical site protected he looked very handsome too! I have used it other times as well to keep Buster from chewing at himself. I wish Tek a speedy recovery.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Pixie had Lp surgery just as you describe with the repositioning and pins and she was on crate rest for 6 weeks. I used a small animal ex pen to keep her where ever we were in the house. I also had a play yard that I set up and she was in there a lot. I even put the small expen on my bed so she could be where she was use to hanging out. At night she went back into her play yard. After a week, the surgeon said she could have her sister Rpxie with her so that helped alot. I hope the recovery goes well. I did have a hard time keeping her completely off it but she healed fine.

| Thanks for all the input! He has already started putting some weight on it while outside doing his 'business'...talked w the vet yesterday and she was not at all excited that he was doing that...I have had him n my kitchen behind baby gate bc the instructions said a small area or crate but it seems that everyone else has kept them crated for at least 4 weeks? i have also been letting him hop around n the house bc he does not put wait on it while inside...but also seems i am giving him too much liberty there also. i will be putting him in the crate starting tomorrow morning when i leave for work...It will kill my soul as well as his but like someone previously said i know it's for the best...Thanks again for the help...I am sure he will not thank u but I certainly do bc I do want the best for him and this is our shot at keeping use of that leg! Any other suggestions are certainly welcome!! |

| Yes it really does break your heart when you have to crate them. In the beginning Buster would whine but after a while he would calm down. I just kept repeating that this is what is best for him. Best of luck on the lock down and best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery.

| Well, my heart hurt as I left the house for work this morning. I was the big bad mama and put Tek in the wire crate. He looked so sad and I feel like he thinks I am punishing him Thank goodness I have a great mom who will be staying w him at my house most of the time for the next couple of weeks while I am at work so he will be held and spoiled all day...she loves her lil man like he was a human grandchild!! |

| Basil still has 3 more weeks of X-Pen time for his front leg. Carry hiom out and in, will let him out with his leash for a walk arounf the house and yard, and no running, jumping, stairs, rough housing. It has been a long 6 weeks so far. However, his leg is perfect. No limp now, but sometimes he forgets the splint no longer is on. You do not realize how skinny their legs are until they are shaved or wet. Best of luck. |
