| Cortisone shots???? Has anyone had their yorkie on cortisone shots? My 2 1/2 yr old has allergies. The only thing it seems to affect are his eyes and he scratches like crazy. I have him on childrens benadryl twice daily (per the vet) but it doesn't seem to be helping. poor guy wears a cone 75% of the time to keep him from clawing his eyes. I have switched his food around and currently have him on TOTW. I took him to be microchipped 3 weeks ago and his eyes actually looks decent, but my vet thought they looked horrible and told me to consider the shots. Any opinions?

| Steroids injections can work very well. If he has to wear a cone 75% of the time, it sounds like a major quality of life issue. Have you done a true elimination diet with a novel protein and carb (or hydrolyzed protein) for at least 12 weeks with no other food given? Antihistamines aren't great for allergies in dogs. They work sometimes for environmental, but definitely not always. If the elim. diet didn't work, has allergy testing been done (for environmental allergies)? Atopica tried (or allergy shots)? It sounds like there is an immediate need for relief. I'd personally be doing steroids until a diagnosis and better treatment plan can be figured out. However, you can't really do allergy testing until steroids have cleared the system.

| He's been on this food for about 6 weeks now. I have never had him allergy tested( vet has never mentioned it) but maybe I should discuss it with him. Something else I've noticed though.... Until our 2nd yorkie (9 weeks) and his mama have been with us, I never realized yorkies teared. Bevo has never "teared" and I'm wondering if that part of the problem! Something else to discuss with the vet! Lol

| Cujo is 5 yrs. old and has developed terrible allergies. After several days of sneezing, scratching and gunky eyes I took him to the vet. They gave him a steroid shot and told me to use Banadryl. He's quite a bit better but not totally cured. I know what you mean about the eyes, Cujo's eyes are driving him crazy! I absolutely believe his allergies are from all the new green grass and plants as we haven't made any food changes. I'd say the steroid shot made him 80% better! Good luck! PS-We're practically neighbors!

| My vet told me to get a store brand because they come in tablets. I give him 1/2 of a tablet wrapped in a piece of a pill pocket a couple of times a day. I got a pill splitter at my pharmacy for about 5 dollars, that way I don't overdose him. It has really helped with the sneezing and itching and especially the gunky eyes. I don't know if the Benadryl alone without the steroid shot would work. Guess you could try it, though. Hope this helps!

| I will go get the pill version today!!! He hates the liquid!! We have been giving him Benadryl for the past 3 weeks straight this episode...and Ive had a "cone" on him. Saturday, I had cooked some hamburger meat, and gave him a bit, but he couldnt eat it with his cone on...so, I took it off for all of 5 minutes and turned my back. He clawed his eye so bad it was bleeding above it! Poor guy....I am definately going to try the cortisone and see if that helps!! Oh, and I am 50 miles south of Amarillo! Guess you knew that though, huh? lol

| They are okay if a pup needs immediate relief. It is almost never the treatment of choice long-term if Atopica or allergy shots work (if it's environemntal). Or if it's food, the diet should be changed and then the steroid wouldn't be needed. It's only been 6 weeks, so a food allergy can't be ruled out yet. Also, since you gave hamburger the other night, the whole elimination diet has to be started over. Most foods that you can get from the pet store aren't great candidates for elimination diets though. So they are okay to use, but they aren't the easiest drugs for pups to process. Finding an alternative is pretty important/figuring out what the allergy is, etc.

| My previous yorkies used to have terrible allergies that would cause eye infections, very inflamed skin. My vet would give her a shot of prednisone in the office, followed by a short course of steroids to be taken orally at home. This would usually clear it up - for a while. The vet would go back and forth about allergy testing for her. They would be ready to arrange it, then she would clear up and they would want to wait on the testing. She is passed now, but I can sympathize with what you and your pup are going thru. I remember, like EllieMay said, they didn't recommend keeping her on the steroids. They helped, but if it doesn't stay clear, they recommended allergy testing. |

| Food allergies account for about 10%. It was much more likely environmental. Certainly worth a try though...

| Do you think the fact that he doesn't "tear" may have something to do with it?

| Does he have KCS then? How is it being treated? Couldn't tell you if they are related, but if he has dry eye and the vet hasn't done anything, he may need to see an opthamologist.
