chronic pancreatitis help My 7 year old yorkie has just been diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis. The vet put him on a prescription diet that may be good for the condition, but has little nutritional value. I am also wondering if there is anything else I can do to prevent a flare-up again the future like the three we have had in the last two years....scary!

| There isn't much you can do except continue to be very careful about what he eats. Has he had a flare-up since starting the rx diet?

Hi, My 9 year old Hugo has pancreatitis. the main key is to avoid foods high in protein. Hill prescription ID dry and canned food is good for this. You can only get it with a prescription with your vet. My vet carries it and I feed it to Hugo alot. He realy seems to love it. I really have to be careful what I feed him, NO TABLE SCRAPS! I do however, feed him boiled chicken with plain rice a couple times a week so that he doesnt get tired of the same old food. He also eats dry food from Flint fiver Ranch foods, which he loves. Its baked and doesnt have a high protein count. They also sell dog treats. Hugo has been hospitalized twice because of dehydration from this disease. Luckily he has not had an episode in over a year and I hope it stays that way

My little Cricket had chronic pancreatitis. She was on the Royal Canine GI per the vet. She also was on a low-fat diet (no cheese). It cut down on the episodes, but as she aged they continued to occasionally happen.

Pancreatitis My sweet little Gracie is in the hospital right now with acute pancreatitis. We are so worried about her. She is 12 wks today and we have only had her for a wk. and a half. I have been giving her chicken breast once a day with her dry food. She is so tiny only weighs 2lbs.4oz and I thought I was helping her gain weight. Could this have caused Pancreatitis?

Thank you Thanks to everyone for their support. I have him on Science Diet ID food now and he is doing better. Hopefully we won't have more episodes!

I have some experience with pancreatitis, but it is in my miniature schnauzer not my yorkie...my schnauzer is also hyperlipidic (meaning she has a high level of fat in her blood...which makes her more prone to pancreatic attacks). I have been able to manage her symptoms and disease with the switch to a raw diet and natural supplements (under the advice of my holistic vet). We've had one episode in 7 years. If you are unhappy with the prescription diet (and I was)...then I suggest visiting a holistic vet and perhaps home-cooking for him. I like controlling exactly what's in their diet.
