| Itching and Licking?? Princess was spayed 5 days ago and has been itching and licking herself a lot, she rarely does either otherwise. I am supposed to be putting her back on frontline next month, as I like to give her a break from the chemicals when the bugs aren't rampant. I removed her e-collar today, as I didn't know if that was bothering her. Do you think she could've got fleas or something from the clinic? Or maybe a reaction from the meds or something? Just curious...I'll prob give the vet a call in the morning, but thought I'd ask for your insight, too. |

| my first thought was that when wounds heal they often get itchy. does she lick/itch the incision or just all over? have you seen a flea or bug on her at all? i wouldn't worry about fleas if you aren't seeing anything on her. and mange is itchy, but you would start to notice sores and kind of a cruddy patch here and there. it's defin. a possible allergic reaction to something. any known food allergies, grass/weed allergies, what meds is she on?? defin. call the vet and see what they say. they may want to have another look at her too. let us know what they say!! |

| she's mainly leaving her incision alone, just a lot of itching her legs, ears, neck, rolling around trying to scratch her back. i took the cone & her harness off her since i'll be keeping her in for a few more days still. i don't see any irritation on her, no redness, bugs, etc. i've been giving her all-over scratches and she looks soooo relieved when i do it. the only thing different is that i've been giving her some cesar meals this week to try to get her to eat more, but i usually give those to her for special occasions, etc. but she has no known allergies to anything, she even went without reaction last summer when she got stung by a bee on her foot. i think the vet opens at 9, maybe 10 on sat. so i'll be calling them soon. |

| Try to take a flea comb and go down her back a couple of times, around her ears and neck. See if you get any. I very well could be the meds that she had that could be causing her itching. At least if you flea comb her and get nothng you can rule that out. |

| I've brushed her with the flea comb & found nothing. I called her vet and they wanted the Humane Society to address it...they have not called me back, and I put the call in hours ago. I want to know what it is, I don't want her to go under for her dental or something and have the reaction manifest itself into something more dangerous. Plus she is going crazy...growling & such as she tries to bring herself comfort. I think I'm going to look into giving her some benadryl or something in the meantime. |

| 1-800-petmeds says "The usual dose in dogs and cats is 0.5-2mg/pound by mouth every 8 to 12 hours." hopefully that will give her some relief....I don't understand why the Vet wants the Humane Society to deal with her problem...are they the ones that spayed her? poor little girl..I hope you figure out what is going on soon!

| thanks. i'm about to head out to get some liquid benadryl. the humane society did perform the spay through the "operation fix-it" program, but still you would think my vet would want the money from an exam anyways but i'm starting to question this vet since i took her spay certificate into them yesterday. i asked them what food they recommend for small breed, etc. and the receptionist & tech answered "purina". so i don't know. princess has been on diamond her whole life but since i've recently switched to the adult formula (mixed w/puppy) she seems to be eating waaay less, and i think she just dislikes the flavor. i've been researching royal canin yorkie & think i'm going to give them a try. |

| I would personally find a new vet who hires staff who know how to answer the phone! I also would not just give benadryl without knowing why my dog was itching. I would call around to other vet clinics today to see if someone will see her. I'd call the humane society again - is anyone answering the phone?

| i just talked to the emergency animal hospital and they suggested i give her 1/1 mL of children's benadryl for 2-3 days, then follow up with the vet if no improvement. she said it is definitely an allergic reaction to something, though she doubts it's from the surgery, as it was so many days before the symptoms. i did give her different varieties of the cesar meals to entice her to eat so maybe that is the problem, too. i wish i could give her an oatmeal bath or something, but i know i still have to wait. she is however, bouncing off the walls today, so it's not hindering her endless-energy AT ALL!! glad i cherished those few days of snuggling love & attention. lol. |

| my advice would be to defin not feed her anything new at all and keep her on a regular diet for now. you have prob. come across a food allergy in one of those ceasar mixes and because there were several varieties it will be very hard to pin point what food caused the allergic reaction. i'd go forward with the new vet's benedryl recommendation and dosages and see if that helps and then when she's off the benedryl see if her itching stops too. little dogs can have a lot of food/environmental allergies. it's never a great idea to switch up their foods and if you ever do it should be done slowly over about a week's worth of mixing and transitioning for their systems to learn to adapt to that change. for now i'd keep her on what her normal food is which i think you said was diamond. from my experiance with vets and dog food, most vets recommend purina, eukanuba, or science diet. none of these in my personal opinion are quality enough dog foods, and diamond dog food is even less quality of food than purina or science diet. in the future when her allergy clears up I recommend that you might consider making a very slow transition to a more premium dog food such as Acana, Taste of the Wild, Old Mother Hubbard, Fromm, or something along those lines found in a natural or hollistic pet foods store. Royal Canin for yorkies has a pretty high rating, but some dogs are allergic to the high amounts of corn in it (mine was) you'll have to be careful with any food switching now, because I believe you may have found a food allergy and won't know what caused it. It could be any number of the ingrediants in those ceasar meals and you may never know what exactly it was. good luck and i hope she stops those itchies soon. |

thanks. i was under the impression that diamond was a high-quality food, by the breeders recommendation & also by doing the food grading calculations on YT. but i will def look into the other brands and make a switch the next time i have to buy, but it will be a while, since she eats so little. as for the benadryl it either hasn't kicked in yet or is not working, as she is even stopping in the middle of playing to scratch herself. i was going to buy her this anti-itch spray at the store but one of the top ingredients was alcohol, which is very drying. i'm just going to keep her "naked" and keep scratching her...it's good bonding time at least. | |

| just wanted to update that princess is doing better, i gave her one dose of benadryl today & the itching really hasn't been a prob. i do agree that it probably was a food allergy, as the vet said an allergy related to the spay would have shown sooner. she has also regained full energy and is driving me nuts!!! she acts like she went months without playing, not 6 days! but i love her so i guess i'll be giving my wrist tendonitis a run for it's money. |
