| Choking Hi all. I'm new the forum. I have a 14 month old female. for the last 2 days she appears to have short stints of gagging choking. She still eating just fine but sometimes seems to choke a little after drinking. If the problem persists I'll be off to the vets but at the moment I'm lookin for possible answers. many thanks Dave |

| Welcome to YorkieTalk. If your Yorkie has long facial hair, carefully check her mouth, especially the corners, to make sure she doesn't have a little hair wrapped around into her mouth and going down her throat. Do this in bright light because the hair can be difficult to see. If it is not hair, and if it is associated only with water drinking, bring her to the vet for an exam if it persists, as you wrote. Could be anything from a little congestion to collapsed trachea. My younger boy did something similar not long ago: coughed and gagged for about 3 days every time he drank water. I think he was snorting some through his nose.

Just want to add... do you give your pup rawhide or similar chews? If yes, a piece could break off and be stuck in her throat... A vet would have to remove this as permanent damage could be done if removed improperly....

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I always check to see if they have hair down their throat when they start choking or coughing. 2 of mine choke after drinking water frequently. Not sure if they are drinking too fast or what. Hope it is just something like that.
