| blood in stool hi, i am a new member and just got my puppy yesterday. he doesnt want to eat much but seems ok. i got Karo syrup today because thats what lady i got him from told me to give him till he was little older. only gave him about teaspoon today, and a Honeycomb peice of cereal for a treat for peeing on his peepad. i crated him because he keeps peeing on my floors regardless of peepads. he was in about an hour which we both hated. i got him out and noticed his first stool had blood in it. is this from the syrup? not eating? he doesnt seem stressed out-very playful and all just not eating too much. unless i am overreacting, right now he is very sleepy and doesnt want to play. what do i do? thanks! |

| Hi, I would definitely take him to the vet ASAP. Anytime you get a new puppy your vet should check them out to make sure the little one is healthy. Blood in the stool could mean many things but a vet could make sure that it is not life threating. I would also buy a tube of Nutrical which is full of wonder things for a new puppy and especially if they don't want to eat. Good Luck! Living Dust Mop Gang |

| it's normal for them too sleep a lot, but the blood in the stool really worries me. I HIGHLY suggest making a vet appt ASAP!!! blood in the stool is always a bad sign. I don't want to make you worry, but I do think it is something to be concerned about. It wouldn't be because of the syrup, or because of his eating habits. it could be urinary tract infection or something smaller. either way call the vet. may I make a healthier suggestion then the kyro syrup? I'd try Nutri-Cal. rather then just being sugar, Nutri-cal has vitamins and Minerals added to help. it's for finicky eaters and puppies. Kyro syrup is only sugar and has no vitamin or mineral's in it. You give the same amount of nutri-cal and it's not nearly as messy as syrup can get. You can find Nutri-Cal at your vets or at PETsMART. I'd ask your vet about the Nutri-Cal. It's what my Yorkies Breeder suggested and he loves it. He licks it right off my finger. It's recommended that you give your baby Nutri-Cal until four months of age. and even after that if your dog is a toy I give it too him once a day to help him gain weight, and it helps prevent hypoglycemia. | Take him for the 72 hour check-up as it must be done to fulfill the terms of the contract. Then, after he has been given a clean bill of health, you can just take a stool sample in for exam UNLESS he starts passing blood again. HGE can kill one of these fine little babies in a very short time. ALWAYS, check the gums to make sure they stay pink. If they are white or grayish, big trouble..Head for the vet |

| Hi and welcome to YT. Glad you found us. How old is your yorkie and how much does he weigh? What kind of food did the breeder give you? Sorry so many questions but it will help the people here w/experience help you. Some babies when they get to their new home develop a problem called Coccidia which causes diarhea and sometimes blood in the stool. The treatment is usually a medicine called albon which is only about $15 or so. Please do not let the vet costs keep you from getting your new little one checked. Don't worry about the cost of neutering yet if he is a puppy although if you plan to have this elective surgery for him then you should start saving for it. If he isn't eating you need to entice him with bland chicken or make a mixture of rice cereal and goats milk or buy the colostrum milk at the pet food store. They love that. He needs to eat every four hours or they can get hypoglycenia or low blood suger which can cause seizures, comas and even death. Make sure he drinks plenty of water also and get pedialyte (unflavored). You can add a little sugar to the water. It is best to use filtered, bottled or pedialyte but not tap water. Let us know how he is doing. |

| Blood in the stool is the most common sign of an intestinal parasite. If such is the case, the vet will give your little one a treatment similar to when they are de-wormed. But I have to warn you, the 'end' result is much messier and stinks to high heaven... |

| no blood this time ok well, i just noticed muffins stool has no blood this time.and according to contract from breeder, the 72 hour checkup is for refund or another pup if defect is found. and also states that i have 2 years for no defect or get another pup. so anyways, should i still take muffin to vet? he ate his bowl of ground food with little soft food and been drinking water. i dont mind taking him to VET but $43 to find he is ok?! thanks! |

| $43 is nothing compared to what it may cost if there is a serious problem. Take your puppy to the vet. |

| So what did your vet say? Just curious as to how Muffin's vet appointment went. If you posted a different thread reporting that, I missed it. Hope all is well!
