| Itchy ears ad hair loss! Please Help I'm at a loss! Mindy started really itching the past couple of weeks and I assumed it was her dry skin or maybe allergies. It has become so bad that her hair is coming out and she has lost her ear hair. There is no smell, or brown mess in her ear a all. Her inner ear is red from scratching but no blood or wax. I hear that it can be expensive for treatment at the vet but of course I will run to my Vet asap but before I do this, is there something I can do to help her itching? hair loss? How much does the treatment cost? Here are a few photos of the back of her ears. She may look wet or oily due to me just cleaning her ears. Please help! Tell me what this look likes to you. |

| Have you taken her to see a vet and ruled out an ear infection? She might have the beginnings of one. She could also have some fluid in there. I would take her in to be safe.

| I would take her to the vet right away, or first thing in the morning anyway -- that is enough of a reaction that medical attention is needed. No guessing. Could be different things. Better to take her to the vet where he can take a scraping, use those special lights, look under a microscope, see it up close, and made an educated opinion about what it really is. I am concerned as you mentioned the inner ear is red and showed pics of the outer ear being red and hair missing. I suppose just the act of scratching could be making both sides red. With no smell or residue in the ear at all, it makes me wonder against ear mites, yeast, or the normal ear problems. Are you sure there are no fleas? The vet will probably want to know about other symptoms, any changes in diet/bedding/grooming products/household cleaners & even new furniture or rugs. Any evidence of fleas? Been in unusual environment of any kind? Come into contact with any unusual substances? If their are known allergies, has their been contact with the allergen? Any temperature? Change in eating, drinking, peeing, BMs, or temperament? You say this has been going on for a couple of weeks but "of course I will run to my Vet asap" -- I think "asap" has passed a while back and now we are at NOW! You also express concern over the expense of "treatments" and ask how much can the "treatment" cost -- WHAT treatment do you mean? Is there something specific you think it is? What sort of treatment are you thinking she needs? Please do not continue to worry over the cost of a treatment she may or may not need. This little one needs to see a vet today!

| No change in diet, bm, activities or anything just scratching. I've been up googling different things about her itching and such. No fleas. She does not go out often especially with the cold weather we've been having here. I thought her itching was either allergies or her shampoo. I'm sorry to have waited before bringing her in but everything will be fine once i get her in to the vet this morning. |

| I did look for an article for you. Here is one that gives the top answers as fleas, ear mites, allergies, mange and infection. Why are My Dog's Ears Losing Fur? | DailyPuppy.com and here is another http://www.dailypuppy.com/articles/c...7-6f3f9f156ce8 -- this second one has more possibilities. and another: http://www.lowchensaustralia.com/health/skin.htm which goes into more detail on skin conditions. Allergies seems like they would cause itching in other areas and not just on the ears. But maybe that is just where it is showing most? Hope the vet gives some answers soon!

| My first thought after looking at the pictures would suggest ear mites. But either way, better to get to the vet and know for sure. Good Luck.

| If you blow up the pics you will see mite egg cases stuck on various hairs on the outsides of her ears. More than likely this is Sarcoptic mange mites (Scabies in humans) and is easily treated with the Heartworm preventative Revolution, which also kills Sarcoptic mites. The mites themselves are easily missed on skin scrapings under the microscope so you could save your money there. Is anyone in the household itching or showing a red bumpy rash, or does anyone get itchy after holding her on their lap? Yorkies are prone to Sarcoptic mites and they are usually found on the ears.

| Another telltale sign of Sarcoptic mange mites is white flakes that can be seen along the very edges of the ears, you will have to separate the hairs at the very edge to see them, and some will come off if you comb the ears with a flea comb.... but combing will not get rid of the mites, one would still need to treat her with Revolution.

Poppy's Mamma ♥ Donating Member | It could be ear mites. Poppy had them when I first brought her home, I couldnt see anything inside of her ear but she would scratch until she cried and the hair was starting to fall out behind her ear. Took her to the vets, she had ear mites. She was given ear drops which cost under £20 and the mites were killed with one course of antibiotics.

| Ha! I can't see the eggs clearly, but if you look closely, there are tiny white specks on 4 or 5 of the hairs (can't count the broken ends) but more in the middle of the hair shaft that is not caused by the camera flash and is not a part of normal Yorkie coloring, so I am assuming these are eggs. They are the right size to be eggs, whether they are mite eggs or not, I am not sure, but I bet whatever laid them is causing the itching. Actually looks more like head lice eggs in humans. My vet told me it didn't matter as to the exact identity, that Revolution should kill them. Yorkies can pick up alot of 'noseeums' on walks, and in leaves on the ground. Most don't take up permanent residence, but when they do, they will tear their ears up. When I first adopted Tinkerbell, her ears were thick from the damage done from her scratching and full of scabs and sores. It took a few months before they returned to normal looking ears. And they can and will migrate to other parts of the body, but they usually start at the ears.

| Mindy's Getting Better! Well, Mindy was taken to the Vet yesterday morning. Surprised to find ot that there are no mites or anything! She has a bad ear infection. Vet prescribed Epi-Otic to clean her ear twice a day and Panalog Cream(Animax Ointment) twice a day also. I also asked for that horrible cone of shame thing to protect her from scratching her ears. No scratching all day yesterday or today. Yeyyy! I'm very happy that she is feeling much better and not in any discomfort. Now the only thing is to wait for her hair to grow back! Thanks to all of you for your opinions, support and get well wishes. |

| Hmm...I think I may have to take my Teddy to the vet and have him checked out. He too scratches his ears constantly but they are never red and the hair has never fallen out. I thought it was just the hair in his ears that was itching him. I tried changing his shampoo since I thought it was allergies. I even brought an ear cleaner that I use everytime I give him a bath, but he still itches them constantly. |
