Animal Smiley 036 My sick pup...HELP!!!

My 3 month old Yorkie has not been well these last 2 days. I've taken him to our local vet. He has had an antibiotic injection, his blood has been tested and he has also had x-rays done. His x-rays showed that the right side of his heart is a little abnormal in colour - meaning it is a lighter colour than normal?? We have yet to receive the blood test results and are anxiously waiting to hear anything at this point.

His symptoms are:
1. He has vomited once.
2. He has barely touched any food for 2 days but has been drinking (which we are thankful for)
3. He has no energy at all and is continuously sleeping.

Any knowledge of these symptoms or outcome would be helpful.

I'm very concerned and appreciate any advice. Thanks

Not eating maybe the cause of no energy. Did the vet recommend any special diet. Bland diet. steamed chicken and rice. Do you have NutriCal?

I'm sorry your little one is sick. Has your vet mentioned seeing a specialist about his heart? How long have you had him? Have you spoken with the breeder?

When you say "lighter in color", to me that would suggest there were some infiltrates in the lungs, suggestive of a pneumonia or pulmonary effusions. How is his breathing doing?

We have been given Medical from our vet, but unfortunately he has refused it. We have tried hand feeding him (Royal Canin) which was also recommended by our vet. We haven't been to see a heart specialist as we are still awaiting his blood test results. About asking the breeder, my sister has our pup's brother and he is fine, we really don't find it necessary to contact him right now.

I have given him liver snacks and surprisingly he has eaten it and is drinking a little water with it.

He is still not as active at all.

Yes, he has a bit of wheezing. Our vet also mentioned that he has some gas build-up but didn't say anything about pneumonia or pulmonary effusion concerns. Sorry, I'm not sure what pulmonary effusions is. What is that exactly?

Default So sorry to hear about your sick baby

I'm really sorry to hear that your baby is so sick. Teppi is 13 wks old & was really sick last night. Throwing up, running a fever, no energy & sleeping alot. Thank God after she threw up her fever started coming down, she started drinking & after a couple of hours her fever was gone & no more vomiting. I have no idea what happened. I was a nurse for 26 years. When your vet said that the right side of your babies heart was an abnormal color makes me think that there is something going on there that's causing the weakness, low energy level, lack of appetite & sleepiness. When the heart doesn't function properly it can cause these symptoms because of not getting enough blood through which causes less oxygen to the brain. How is her breathing? She's not wheezing, coughing or having a gurgleing sound is she? Some of her weakness & low energy level could be because she's not eating. What are you feeding her? A couple of times when I first got Teppi she wouldn't eat her regular food. I gave her some of that Cesar Puppy with chicken & beef in the little white canister with the pink label from Wal-Mart & she ate it up. Maybe you could try that. Be sure to keep plenty of water available. I'd keep it by her side if she's weak so she doesn't have far to go to get it. I can't believe that's all the vet told you, about the color. I would think that the vet would have been able to give you some kind of idea of what might be going on. Doctor's do that for people all the time. Depending on the color could mean different things but the vet could have at least said it might be this or it might be that or that he didn't think it was related to the heart. Something! I know you're very sad. I was scared to death last night with Teppi. From now on when you go to the vet or even your own Doctor, if you think of any questions you want to ask before going make a list & GET ANSWERS. If you don't have questions before to make a list ask plenty of questions while you're there. If you think of something when you get home, call them back. ALWAYS ask plenty of questions for your own peace of mind. I'll be thinking about your baby & you. I hope everything gets better real soon. Why don't you go get some of the food & try it. Can't hurt. If it were me & my baby showed the slightest sign of getting worse or breathing like I mentioned I'd go immediately to an Emergency vet. Let me know what the vet says & how your baby is doing. Pam & Teppi

Thank you for your concerns and your helpful advice. Sammy is being fed Royal Canin and is now eating a few snacks. His appetite is still not the norm but am just grateful that he's drinking. I'm still waiting to hear back from our vet in regards to the blood work results from earlier this afternoon. Our vet is also an emergency surgeon and he told us he wanted to wait for blood results first in order to compare with the x-rays taken. We're now waiting as we're still very worried. Yes, he does have some wheezing sounds, not a lot but there is some. Thanks again for your concerns. I really appreciate it.

Is Medical the same thing as Nutrical? Do you have some corn syrup, like Karo? You can rub some of that on his gums and that would work faster.

Did your puppy have the wheezing this afternoon at the vet? Lay him on his side where it's quiet, maybe on the floor & get down , put your ear to the side of his chest & listen to his breathing. Do you hear like a gurgling sound. Like a wet sound. Can you or could you hear him wheezing @ the vet's without listening to his chest, or has this started since you got home? I'm not trying to bother you. I'm just concerned. The wheezing could be some type of respiratory distress or still connected to the heart.

For the eating...Could you hand feed him some plain chicken breast? My two weren't into eating after their surgery for spay and neuter, but they sure ate when I hand fed them chicken.
I hope your little guy feels better soon.

I'm so sorry your puppy is unwell. I happened to notice that you are from Maple Ontario.
There are some good emergency hospitals and specialists relatively near to you, if you should need them. VEH Vet Emergency Hospital in Toronto, University Of Guelph, in Guelph Ontario.

How did your baby do through the night & how is he this morning? I hope there's some improvement. Just concerned. I hate to know that babies, & parents, are going through some type of sickness. Pam & Teppi

Sorry I didn't answer this last night. A pulmonary effusion (or pleural effusion) is the build up fluid around the lung. It's caused by problems with the heart or liver (long story short, the osmotic pressure changes in the capillaries and they leak). Pneumonia on the other hand is an infection within the lungs that causes fluid to build up inside. Both give a whitish appearance on the xrays. Gas (air ) build up can occur both inside the lung and outside of the lung and is something that needs to be watched.

Either cause can lead to difficulties breathing in your dog. I'm kind of surprised they sent him home if he was wheezing. Please keep a sharp eye on your dog for any increase in the wheezing, very fast breathing, excessive panting. Take him to the nearest ER vet if this happens. The lethargy can also be a sign that he isn't getting enough oxygen.

Please keep us updated on how your little one is doing.
