| Behavior following a concussion... On December 25th Mija jumped out of my mothers arms and fell on her head. She passed out immediately from the concussion. We rushed her to the hospital and when she arrived her heartbeat was really slow and she was barely breathing, her tongue was also very swollen. The vet quickly put her in an oxygen tank, and gave her an injection to prevent water in her lungs and medicine to prevent inflammation. The x-rays showed nothing was brocken and she did not have any internal damage. She quickly stabalized but they kept her overnight in the intensive care unit. They let us take her home the following afternoon to give her a chance to eat and rest in a familiar environment. She was doing a lot better compared to the previous night but her walk was wobbly and tongue really swollen and has a hematoma underneath. Each day we see improvement and we are so thankful that she was saved; we thought we had lost her. Although she is doing better, we see many differences in her behavior. She rarley ever barks and when she does its not the same as when she did before. She used to be a cryer and now she never does and when she does try its like if she isn't able to get a sound out. She doesn't want to be held or hugged and won't give us any 'kisses'. She doesn't get excited by anything and just lays in her bed staring at her surroundings. I was wondering if anyone had been through something similar and would know if her behavior is normal after a traumatic event. I know it has only been a week, but i'm worried about her. I also noticed her ears were very warm tonight and they are usually cool, does anyone know what the cause of this could be? My vet is closed tonight so I was not able to contact them... |

| I have never had any experience with this. I would schedule a follow up appointment with your vet. Last edited by MaddiesMommie; 01-01-2011 at 07:09 PM. |

| I would ask for a referral to a neurologist ASAP... and I would have an ER vet take a look at her tonight...

| Sorry I forgot to mention she did have a follow up appointment 3 days later and they said everything was fine and she did not know what to say about the changes in her everyday behaviour. Before she came home she did see a neurologist and he said she was fine... Last edited by mija1106; 01-01-2011 at 07:17 PM. |

| She very obviously isn't 'fine', I would get a second or third opinion... did they xray her and check her skull and neck? How old is Mija?

| Mija is 2 1/2. They took several x-rays of her head, neck and body 3 different times. Once when she first got in, the next day before letting us take her home, and when we went for her follow up. All three sets showed nothing abnormal and were examined by several doctors. I will call tomorrow morning when they open to schedule another follow up with the neurologist. |

| Yes, very well. She has been eating convalescence canned food and she just started eating her kibble as well since the swelling in her tongue has gone. She is breathing and walking normally and is alert. When you look at her you can't tell that a week ago she almost died, its just when you compare her to before the accident that we notice a difference in the way she acts with us. We do see little improvements everyday so I don't know if i'm overreacting and all she needs is time to recover or if something else is the problem. |

| She may indeed just need more time; but I would definitely contact the neurologist and tell him what you are seeing that is worrying you! Please keep us posted.

I would try some little exercises with her to rebuild her confidence. If she is fearful of being held, sit on the floor with her and put her in your lap. Very gradually work up to having her in your lap when you are on the couch or a chair. If she's avoiding petting, pet her anyway gently, to show her it doesn't hurt. She may be remembering pain from earlier on in the week. If she really continues to protest, and shows no improvement in accepting the petting, I would seek another opinion. I believe Yorkies are very smart, but I think she could be feeling distrust in her humans, as they are supposed to protect her from harm, but she got hurt anyway. I am not placing blame or anything like that... just trying to find reasons for her behavior. I've stepped on toes at times and the look I got from my Yorkie was shocking... like she was stunned that I caused her pain and she started avoiding me till I picked her up and apologized to her and kissed the booboo... I probably talk to mine too much but they seem to understand my intentions when I do. I've had them limp until I pick them up and acknowledge their problem (like a bad step when playing fetch) and then when I put them down they run off to find the ball again like nothing happened. It sounds like she's had very thorough exams .... so maybe some extra coddling may help...

| She probably has a headache and more then likely hurt her neck as well and possibly her back. You say she had a hematoma under her tongue, is it still there ? if so it's probably very uncomfortable & why the change in barking & whining. Did the vet give her any meds for swelling ? like Prednisone ? Did the vet x-ray her neck & back ? If this were my dog I would deff have asked for those things to be done. With a hit on the head it is very important to keep swelling out as it can lead to scarring in the brain witch can later lead to seizures. I would deff be seeking a Neuro and possible MRI ASAP. |

| Isn't it possible too that if her tongue is swollen that is what's affecting her bark? Bruises can be painful, maybe it hurts to bark right now. I hope you get to the bottom of this and Mija will be better soon. |

Is she sensitive at all to loud noises; like the doorbell ringing or loud clapping? When you call her name, does she turn her head to the sound of your voice? And is the head turn done easily and smoothly? Does she jump up easily onto a low stool or couch? When you watch her sleep, does she turn over easily? Does she ever turn onto her back? When you watch her walk, does she carry her head at the same level and angle as before the fall?
