Nursing Question ... Hi My yorkie had puppies about 6 weeks ago - and I found out last week that I should be weaming the babies off of mom's milk. The problem is that mom continues to want to feed them!!! Even with sore nipples from their teeth. So I was suggested to separate them for a few days to let mom's milk dry up before putting them back in with her. So they can eat the puppy food and not go to her for food. THE PROBLEM IS: How long does it take to have mom's milk dry up? Is it like a normal human's - a couple days. Or is it longer. Plus - I had to separate them cuz mom was wanting to eat there puppy food. It's so hard - what do i do? Please help - this is serious. I don't want these baby's drinking milk their WHOLE lives. LOL - joke. Katie

| Don't do that !!! My Lily had pups 5 weeks ago, this is her first litter and my 4th I have bred and raised. Yes start puppy food, only seperate the mom and pups when the pups are eating. Your mommy dog should wean them on her own. She will too, especially when they start biting with their teeth. When the pups are about 7 - 8 weeks you will notice the mommy dog will lessen her time with the pups. Her milk should dry up naturally also. I'm sure she is doing it right now. Does she sleep with the pups? My Lily stoppped that 2 weeks ago. But she feeds them regularly Never seperate a mommy dog for more than a few minutes if possible. With the puppy food, I use Nutro: Lamb & Rice Puppy Food. I water it down to make a paste or pablum, this gives the pups something soft to swallow. Remember they need to learn to chew. So first the musshy food and gradually with in a week for your guys, they should be able to chew dry Nutro kibble. I normally start pups at 4 weeks the pablum, lessening the water within a few weeks. So by 6 - 7 weeks they eat dry kibble. Good luck

I don't wean mine as early as they say to do it. At 6 weeks, if she is still wanting to nurse all the time, I would start having her spend a few hours at a time away from them. Build the time gradually so her milk will diminish slowly. Before you know it, she will start to shrink and your babies will be fine. Before 8 weeks, I have Mom sleeping all by herself and spending time with the pups off and on during the day. Remember once she is done nursing to start swithching her back over to adult food from puppy food...gradually.

I do want to add not to panic, you aren't doing anything "bad" or "wrong". Enjoy those pups! They seem to change day to day at this point in their lives

It took me awhile about 6 to 8 weeks before I was able to wean my puppies from their mom. You have to separate them from their mom. I gave their puppy formula until I introduce puppy food. Remember if they dont have teeth yet they feel not eat any solid food you have to mix the milk and grind the puppy food, kind of mushy texture. At first, they will not eat but eventually they will get hungry and eat it. My puppies are already
