| Skin problems... I've been lurking for a couple of weeks and found a lot of useful information but I really need feedback today. I got my baby 5 weeks ago from a breeder that I've known for years. Their house has always been dirty but their dogs seemed well adjusted and loved. When I brought her home she stunk really bad and was oily. They said they had sprayed flea spray on her before I got there. When I got her home I bathed her in sensitive shampoo. As I began to look at her I saw all these spots all over her that were like cradle cap. Little yellow crusty spots all over and her chest was scaly. I thought it was just from being so filthy when I got her. The next day I took her to my groomers and she said she had fleas so she bathed her in Dawn and let it sit to get rid of the fleas. I scheduled an appointment to take her to the vet for shots and check up. it took 2 weeks to get her in. By the time I took her in I had found 6 spots of ringworm on me. I'm assuming the ringworm is from her since my other two animals have never had it before. I've been treating myself with apple cider vinegar and econizol. Two of the spots are brown and flat but I am still treating them all. I used diluted ACV on her before we got into the vet. The vet prescribed Mal-A-Ket every other day, let it sit on her for 10 minutes and then rinse. Do not towel dry but let her air dry. I've been doing this for a week now and she still has spots that are crusty and flaky. The fungal culture results should be available in 3-7 days. I guess I just need some reassurance that I'm doing the right thing here. I'm exhausted!! I'm a single Mom with 2 boys. We are trying to wrap up football season and practice every night, games all weekend, work full time, oldest working on his Eagle Scout project, no help from the ex and now this puppy that seems healthy but I have to bathe every two days and disinfect all of her areas...she's going to hate me for her 'torture' every other day...We all know that vets will take their time treating things so you have to come back numerous times. I don't know what to do. Sorry this is so long...just needed someone to 'listen'. Thanks!! |

| I don't have any personal experience with ringworm, but there have been a number of people here who have helped rescue dogs with it. They will be able to share their knowledge and experience. I googled and found that like fleas, cleaning your home is vital in combating the ringworm:

| You may be interested in reading this thread. It is about a rescue yorkie that had full body ringworm. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...-ringworm.html You can also do a search using "ringworm" for other threads on this forum. Hope this helps some.

| Tia had ringworm when we adopted her this past Easter. The vet didn't even catch it until I questioned the ringworm on my arm. Yes, Tia shared everything with everybody, even the neighbor & her dog (ringworm, giardia, and coccidia). Ringworm does not go away for a long time. For at least two whole months we gave the dogs a bath every other day (like you) and yes they hated it. I limited the toys and bedding they had so I could wash/sterilize it when they were washed. Carpet was vacuumed, floors were mopped, kennel/bedding/toys/bowls/collars/baseboards and/or anything they touched were washed every other day. Everything that was washed had bleach in it (other than the dogs). I purchased a carpet/furniture shampooer so I could clean it regularly. They weren't allowed on the furniture, but they did brush up against it. When you walk where they walk, you are taking the ringworm spores with you throughout the house. I think they can live for two months on furniture and stuff like that. I went thru a ton of bleach and Tide. Me and my neighbor cried alot. Good luck and I know how you feel. It is not fun and it does take time! Oh, the shampoo may dry out your babies skin. I had to deal with that afterwards with Ally. It was like she had frosted flakes on her neck that would not go away. |

| That's probably what the flakes are from. Why didn't the vet warn me about keeping her away from everything?!?!? She has been all over my house. I did find the other thread from ozziesmommy and started to spray everything down with Lysol. Can't bleach the couch. I'm really frustrated with this vet for acting like it is no big deal. We should have culture results back tomorrow. Anxious to know for sure!! |

| I have no helpful advice. I just wanted to send hugs your way. That puppy is so incredibly lucky to have you.

| I'm not sure that Lysol will kill the ringworm spores. I knew I couldn't bleach my couch, that is why I purchased a shampooer. I cleaned the furniture and carpet ('cause remember, even if the dog is not allowed someplace, you are and you carry it around the house) on a regular basis to keep the spores down. My neighbor kept getting ringworm on her face and swore she covered her furniture to keep it form getting infected. (This is like three or so months after the whole thing started.) As soon as she cleaned her furniture, she didn't get another spot! As for the vet, mine freaked out! The first time, she didn't even want me to touch the counter to pay or anybody else. It made me feel just terrible! She told me to keep all three dogs separated, although they all had it. One can start getting better and get it back from another. I wasn't supposed to touch them with bare skin, so I wore gloves and long sleeves for a while. I had to purchase their medication from a specialty pharmacy because Tia was just over a lb and Ally was 3 lbs. It was a never-ending situtation. Believe me when I said we cried! Okay, if I was you, whether you have the results or not, keep the baby on a non carpeted area. Someplace that is easily cleanable. Start washing stuff and limit the stuff that is given (maybe rotate them), so you can manage. Start cleaning. I'm really wishing that your baby does not have ringworm! Please let us know. Sending hugs and kisses!!!!! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Marcel caught ringworm from his first vet; it was on top of his head. They have to grow out a skin culture, to confirm the ringworm (takes at least 10days). Then, if it's positive, they usually prescribe Fluconazole for 6-8 weeks. After the 6-8 weeks, another culture must be done to confirm whether the ringworm is gone or not. Yep, you are doing everything correct...I know it stinks having to wait for those culture results! Hang in there .

| Vet called this morning. Culture was negative. She said I most likely got it from the environment where I picked her up. Shestill has scaly patch on her chest and a few cradle cap looking places on her body. Vet says it's normal for yorkies. Keep using mal-a-ket shampoo for another week. We go back Dec 3 to see the vet. We will see what it looks like by then. There hasn't been any hairloss at all. Thanks for the advice. I'm going to go ahead and clean everything really well to make sure it's not laying around anywhere. |

| I had a rescue back a few years ago, a Boston Terrier who caught ringworm from a kitten we had also rescued. It was nasty, and we had to keep her "quartined" from the rest of the animals, as it is highly contagious. It got better after a trip to the vet to get special shampoo and some sort of rinse. Good luck with your little one!
