| please help my mom has a rescue. his name is Rudy. he has abdominal swelling and was tested for cushings but it was negative. He is 14 years old now. Has been to specialists and they wanted to try the meds for cushings. If he doesnt have it then why.The vet also recommended exploratory surgery to see what is causing this mass in his liver...it isnt cancer...my mom feels its time to let nature take its course and see what happens. she feels he is to old for that kind of surgery as do another opinion vet she saw. I feel terrible. He was my dog first then I had to give him to my mom when i couldnt have three yorkies in an apartment. I am disabled now.but this kills me. his little tummy is so swollen. my mom now gives him milk thistle..........any advice friends? heartbroken for rudy..............boops mom |

| At 14 it could be congestive heart failure or his liver, these things can cause abdominal swelling. There are other things that cause abdominal swelling but those would be the 2 most common things in an aging pet. I would take him to a different vet for a second opinion before I let anyone put him through surgery at his age. How long has he been this way ? is he eating and pooping good ? how often is he pooping ? is he having any trouble peeing ? How did they diagnose a mass in his liver ? | They did an ultrasound of the abdomen. that is how this abdominal mass showed up. He has been to 3 different vets with no diagnosis. only guesses. He has always been a picky eater and most know they are lol....my vet says thiss mass is pushing on the stomach and maybe giving him a sense of fullness without eating. thankyou for replying. Im at my wits end...............boops mom |

| How is he acting now and was he very active before the mass was discovered? Also do any of the vets think he could survive a surgery? I'm guessing they can't tell if it's an operable condition or not at this point in time? If you wanted to try to save him, maybe go ahead with the surgery, as it sounds like he may starve to death if the mass is not removed, which is a bit cruel. If on exploratory, it is found that nothing can be done, it may be kinder to let him go then, on the table, just don't bring him out of the anesthesia. These are such hard calls to make. I pray for strength for you and him as you find your way through this difficult time....

| Oh, I am so sorry to hear about Rudy. I guess unless he has the surgery, your only recourse is to make him comfortable? It's so sad and heartbreaking to know what to do. Whatever you do for Rudy, it is the right thing. We can only do our best given the information and circumstances at the time. Prayers are going out for Rudy and your family.
