| Emma had a seizure brought on by playing?? I am not sure if anyone remembers my little Emma. Long story short, had to give her liquid antibiotics, she inhaled them, stopped breathing and heart stopped, I gave her CPR and flew to ER vet. 3 days later she came home to me. Since then whenever she gets stressed she acts funny, staggers, etc especially after a bath. Well today the new hide a squirrel toys that I ordered came in. AJ was playing nutty with them and I then got Emma playing. Now playing to Emma involves sitting on her bed and crouching down growling and wagging her tail. Well while getting excited over the toy she "fell" over backwards without hitting her head, and immediately seized up and her tongue turned blue and she stopped breathing. I tapped on her chest and called to her, then rubbed her chest harder and blew in her face. She gasped and slowly began breathing. She trembled for 20 mins or so and is now laying on my chest sleeping. I called the vet and am waiting for a return call as to what to do. Now just to let everyone know, Emma is too small for any real interventions. She weighs 1 pound 10 ounces and is 14 months. She has scoliosis, an enlarged heart and cleft palate. Her tongue turns blue under any stressful situations, bathing is the worst and I cannot bathe her then cut her nails or hair due to stress. So everything is done with the least amount of stress on her. In that, we do not visit the vet often ( the worst of all stressors) and do most of the "visits" over the phone. I am a vet tech and nurse and the vets agree with this treatment since when we had her rabies 5 months ago and she did this tongue blue and almost seizing there. Emma was a runt and would not have lived past 1 week had I not intervened. She was very tiny weighing less than 2 ounces at birth and her littermates were all 4-5 ounces. I tube fed her from birth to day 2 then took her away from the rest of the litter at day 8 due to her not gaining and being pushed off the nipple. Since then we have been "attached at the hip". She goes everywhere with me, sleeps on my neck at night. After the CPR episode the vets told me she would have a shorter life expectancy. I knew that and decided to give her the best quality of life for as long as she was here with me. I planned her moms pregnancy, watched her born, and plan on being with her till she does go over the rainbow bridge. She will not be poked, prodded, etc as the vets here have told me she would not survive heart surgery, etc so why put her through that. Medications are almost impossible for her due to tiny size and that she had the CPR event from a liquid one, so I am limited there also. I am just wondering if anyone else has had a Yorkie with this issue? Is there anything I should be doing to help with this? Anything else I could be forgetting to ask the vet about disease wise? Can seizures be controlled with pleasant tasting meds? How about anxiety?

| wow that sounds so familar to me. My Stormy who passed away last July was just a little over two years old. She was 5 lbs and had been born in a puppymill with a real "unknown" history as the woman I got her from was a big liar! She had seizures that were brought on by stress as well! About two weeks after we got her, she had a seizure after her bath. Just like you mentioned she seized, blue tongue, not breahting, totally lifeless. We did CPR and my husband rushed her to the vet, on the way she came to. The fresh air helped I think. We never did figure out a cause or anything to help. We had her for a very short time of 9 months. Taking her everywhere with me helped alot. And then one said day I was gone away for the whole day and had left her home after working two 12 hour shifts the weekend before and she passed away after having a possible seizure at home with my husband. Bless her soul. I hope you can hold on to your sweet baby for just a while longer. Your in my thoughts and prayers! |

| It sounds like you certainly have been through a lot with Emma. Have you discussed with your vet any type of seizure medication?

| Your poor baby! She sounds like a little miracle puppy having made it this long. Are you sure she is having seizures, or could it be syncope from heart problems? This is a pretty good explanation: Heart Attack in Dogs You are in a tough place, as she really needs to see a vet, probably an internist, but that could cause another episode, and possibly death. Trying to figure out what to do must be terribly hard on you. I am so sorry to hear of her problems. Is there anyway you can disguise medication in her food? Or peanut butter or cream cheese? I do this for a lot of my dogs as I have four seniors, three of whom get medications daily. Also, can you have medications formulated for her by places like Drs Foster & Smith or Roadrunner Pharmacy? There may be pharmacies in your area that can do this also. In my area, there's one at our local hospital. Emma sounds precious and I hope you can keep her with you a long time and with a good quality of life. Your wonderful for loving her so well.

| I've no experience with Emma's problems, but I'm sending prayers and best wishes for her.

| Have you tried bringing a vet to your house? My vet is a good old country boy who still does home visits - rare, I know. This might help, at least letting him get hands on her... I don't have anything else to offer except support and well wishes. I hope she continues to do well. You're such a great momma.

| Well I ended up taking her in because she just started trembling all over again but her tongue stayed pink. Findings: Unknown.... But my vet did say that due to her small size, overall conditions, etc that had she been with most breeders she would have either already passed or been put down. That broke my heart. I asked the vet if I was being selfish for keeping her alive and she told me absolutely not. That she is not in any pain and is more spoiled than her 3 year old singleton skin kid. She did tell me that she thinks it is cardiac in nature and that due to her enlarged heart pushing on her trachea it does not take much to make the trachea collapse and her being anxious just adds more stress on her heart. We both agreed that she is a hospice patient. She agrees with no testing as it would be a mute point. They could not due much for her anywhere. I will continue to love her as I do and treat her as a princess. I just think it takes a piece of me every time she does this. I know she is day by day but after months of no problems you let yourself get hopeful then something like this happens to snap you back to reality Thank you for the kind words. Yorkie-mama I am so sorry. It is breeders like that that give honest caring breeders a horrible name. I hope you have found some peace and that your baby is now running around chasing all the little critters she wants.

| You must be an extremely strong person. Bless your heart for everything you are doing. While I've had my own issues with my puppy, they don't even compare to what you are going through. However I can empathize with the fact that things seem to be going well and then all of a sudden something happens to snap you back. Emma is a really lucky girl. Just continue doing what you are doing with her. Again, I'm really sorry that you have to experience this but thank God you are. You saved Emma's life.

| I remember Emma quite well. I'm so sorry she is going through this. The vet's explanation makes sense. My heart goes out to you and I hope that she surprises you and bounces back. For such a small package, she brings lots of love, doesn't she?

| Today she acts like nothing happened I was up 6 times last night just to see her breathing, each time she looked up at me like as if to say, "geesh mom go back to sleep and stop waking me up" brat. I love this dog too much I think and I need some therapy Thank you to all the well wishers. I think this girl chose me for sure and many who are connected to me in my offline life tell me that often. I cannot go for overnights without her, cannot stay longer then 4 hours at family functions, cannot go on vacation, etc. But I would do it again in a heartbeat for her. I told her this morning that I wanted at least 10 more years with her. I think I need therapy for sure....anyone else??

| Yorkielady, my heart goes out to you! Your puppy is your best therapist!!! As for advice, my Bailey has seizures, petti mal, every now and then. She was on meds for it but I didn't feel it was benificial because of all the possible side effects and the fact she wasn't having them a lot. Instead when I notice a seizure coming on she gets really close to me. I will hold her and rub behind her ears. This seems to help Bailey the best and the actual seizure will not last as long, she will lay in my lap for a while after that. Best of luck with you and your puppy, they get so close to our hearts! |
