| what are your opinions? :) So rex went in for a bile acid test a few days ago. these are the results Befor 23 high normal 7 After 66 high normal 22 The reason i took him in to the vet in the first place was because he was having diarrhea and he threw up once and was eating very little. so they ran a full blood work...spec cPL , geriatric panel and urinalysis. they put him on metronidazole 50mg for 5 days and ProGut for 5 days also. so the blood work cam back with everything normal except his white blood count was high and lis liver enzymes were high. and then i went back in for the bile acid test. his urine came back with some crystals but the vet said they are not the type of crystals you usually see with a liver shunt. the next step my vet suggested a ultrasound to determent a liver shunt. oh and they also ant to take a sample of his liver by an injection but first they said they would do a blood clotting test? he has aslo lost some weight last time he got weight he was 4 lbs and when he went in this time he lost almost a whole pound . He just turned a year august 5th so i have been cooking for him and he has been eating all of his food! so i think i will continue doing this from now on! can any one tell me what bile acid test means? does it mean he has a shunt? or what else could this mean? thank you!

| Most often results over 100 indicate a shunt, under 100 indicates MVD. Some owners persue futher testing, but it is also common practice to feed a low protein diet (14-16% protein) and repeat the BAT in 3 months. May be a good idea to start with liver protectants Denosyl and Marin, or Denamarin. These contain milk thistle and SAMe which help the liver to repair itself and prevents liver cell death and injury. Ask your vet. Clotting test is done because if there is a problem with the blood clotting , one wouldn't want to cut the liver, as uncontrolled bleeding may result and is a risk with doing a liver biopsy. There are conditions other than LS that can cause the BAT to be slightly elevated... not always a shunt. I would ask for a copy of any labwork done and keep it in a file, that way you have it just in case you need to go to an ER... plus you can tell us the type of crystals present in the urinalysis... Keeping Rex in my prayers...

| I'm not a doctor but those numbers point more toward MVD. You need to join the LiverShunt Group on Yahoo. There you will learn what to feed. You need to start with low protein diet. Science Diet ld or Royal Canine HP. Your Vet seems to be following the correct protocal. Scintigraphy would be next. They injectect dye into I think the speen and watch it go thru the Liver. Portal Scintigraphy in Veterinary Medicine Good luck to you and your baby. I have been thru this with Manolo. He has MVD and liives a full normal life. Just watch what he eats. And yes right after Manolos scintigraphy he did the biopsy because the scintigraphy came out normal. Then the Biopsy was sent off and that came back MVD. My doctor just did a clear cut biopsy. The Scintigraphy and Biopsy took 20 min. Last edited by manolos mom; 09-07-2010 at 01:34 AM. |
